Top-of-Rack SDN Switch enables 250,000 flow rules.

Press Release Summary:

Consisting of software defined networking solution, ZX1200-SDN Top-of-Rack OpenFlow Switch implements OpenFlow 1.3/1.4 specifications in hardware platform that combines Intel® compute environment with Broadcom®- based switching environment. Twenty-four 1G ports and two 10G uplink ports on front panel are connected to OpenFlow software component. Also configurable as hybrid switch, ZX1200-SDN can provide services to rack of servers that are mix of standard IP routing and OpenFlow networks.

ZNYX Introduces New High Performance ZX1200-SDN Top-of-Rack OpenFlow Switch at Half the Cost of Network Processor Solutions

Unique Design Enables Impressive 250,000 Flow Rules, Large Port Count, and Smooth Upgrade to Pending Specifications

FREMONT, Calif., -- ZNYX Networks(®), an innovator of high-density platforms for carrier-grade and mission critical environments, announced the ZX1200-SDN top-of-rack OpenFlow switch.  A software-defined networking (SDN) solution, the ZX1200-SDN can accommodate a significantly larger volume of custom OpenFlow flow rules than standard hardware solutions at a far more cost-effective price.

The ZX1200-SDN implements the OpenFlow 1.3/1.4 specifications in a unique hardware platform that combines a powerful Intel(®) compute environment with a Broadcom(®) based switching environment. The compute environment hosts the OpenFlow version of Open vSwitch (OVS). This software switch (softswitch) enables large OpenFlow tables with a complete implementation of OpenFlow rule options, and multi-table and group table implementations that fully meet the OpenFlow 1.3/1.4 specifications.

The ZX1200-SDN delivers the port density required for a complete top-of-rack system by integrating a Broadcom switch fabric component.  Twenty-four (24) 1G ports and two (2) 10G uplink ports on the front panel are connected to the OpenFlow software component of the ZX1200-SDN.

"This is a unique product in the OpenFlow switch space," said Jeff Elpern, vice president of Software Business Unit, ZNYX Networks. "The ZX1200-SDN overcomes the small flow rules limits - about 4,000 - of switch silicon only OpenFlow switches.  Benchmark tests have shown the ZX1200-SDN supporting two to three hundred thousand rules in typical OpenFlow use cases. The software switch also provides a more compliant implementation of the OpenFlow rules, compared to solutions that rely solely on standard switch silicon."

"Beyond achieving radically higher OpenFlow flow rules, the ZX1200-SDN costs half as much as network processor based solutions," said Kevin Austin, general manager at ZNYX.  "Additionally, the softswitch provides a far more compliant implementation of the OpenFlow rule selectors, and is upgrade-ready for the pending specifications."

The ZX1200-SDN can also be configured as a hybrid switch, and provide services to a rack of servers that are a mix of  standard IP routing and OpenFlow networks.  The packet tagging capabilities in the ZNYX Packet Filtering technology are used to determine which flows go to the OpenFlow software switch, and which are handled by the IP switch capabilities of the switch fabric.  The platform is "out-of-the-box" configured as a dedicated OpenFlow switch that can be deployed in minutes.
