Kennametal KM Tooling Provides Higher Rigidity for Mill Turn Machines

Latrobe, PA (November 18, 2002) -- Kennametal has expanded its line of KM tooling for integrated turning and milling, or mill turn, machines that provides substantial improvements in rigidity compared to conventional tooling systems. The extended line includes a broad range of collet chucks, hydraulic chucks, boring bar adapters, drill adapters, whistle notch adapters, A3 threading and grooving adapters, gage bars, turning tool adaptors, shell mill adapters, end mill adapters, extensions, and reducers that handle virtually any possible milling/drilling and turning operation on these leading-edge machine tools. "The KM design delivers three-surface contact that provides increased rigidity and accuracy," said Mark Parish, Product Manager for Tooling Systems for Kennametal.

Kennametal's KM quick-change tooling system consists of a spindle that has the KM connection built directly into the spindle. The spindle accepts a KM toolholder or cutting unit using a face and taper contact between the spindle and toolholder. "Conventional tooling works well in rotating applications but suffers from a lack of stability in turning," Parish said. "The three surface contact in the KM system provides more than enough rigidity for both turning and milling."

The Kennametal KM63XMZ tooling system supports the Mazak Intregrex 100Y, 200Y, 300Y, and 400Y series. The KM63XMS tooling system supports the Mori Seiki MT253, MT2000, and MT3000 multi-axis turning centers as well as the Nakamura Tome STW40 turning and milling center. The KM40XTS tooling system supports the Tusgami TMA6 and TMM8 integrated turning and milling machines. The KV4540 supports the Hitachi Seiki Super HiCell 250 integrated machining cell and the KV5045 supports the Hitachi Seiki Super HiCell 400 machining cell.

Machine-specific adaptors make it possible to utilize the full line of existing KM turning tools as well as the broad range of adaptors that Kennametal has introduced to support milling/drilling/turning operations on mill-turn machines. The new line includes the new Kenclamp clamping system that enables inserts to be indexed up to 75% faster than conventional clamping systems. "Kennametal's KM series is now offered for every type of machine, ranging from Swiss-style lathes, to conventional turning centers, to millturn machines," Parish concluded. "It is by far the most extensive modular tooling system on the market."
