New KPT/Speroni STP-HS Presetter and Inspection System Developed For Turn and Turn/Turn Broaching Tools Tailored For The Manufacturing Of Crankshafts

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL-A new KPT/Speroni precision tool presetting and measuring system, STP-HS (horizontal spindle) for turn and turn/turn broaching tools, has been developed for KPT/Kaiser Precision Tooling, Inc.

KPT/Speroni designed the STP-HS system for ergonomical front operation. The HS can be outfitted with an optional CNC unit, allowing for controlled 3-axis movement with automatic and operator-independent operation. This allows for unmatched repeatability and accuracy. Its positioning accuracy is 1 micron (0.000039").

The STP-HS is available in three different configurations (manual, manual/motorized, and full CNC) and will measure tooling diameters between 552 mm (21.7") to 850.9 mm (33.5").

Its thermo-balanced and artificially aged pearlitic cast iron structure provides exceptional stability, rigidity, and resistance to temperature expansion to ensure that the equipment is fully isostatic and will not deform or distort over time or temperature change. Hardened and precision ground guideways and increased bearing surface provide smooth movement and precision along the X- and Z- axes.

When users combine the STP-HS CNC with KPT/Speroni B@ncaDatiInternet (BDI) software for creation of custom inspection cycles for any turn or turn/turn broaching tooling and the KPT/Speroni Vision System (SVS), both standard features on STP-HS CNC version, they can easily achieve inspection certification of turn and turn/turn broaching tools by pressing just one function key, minimizing operator possible errors.

Like its predecessors, this new KPT/Speroni precision tool presetting and measuring system covers the entire field of sophisticated CIM applications, including flexible manufacturing systems and manufacturing cells. Features of the new STP-HS include: Proprietary hyperstatic adapter mechanical clamping system allows for an adapter mount repeatability of .0005 mm (000019"), ensuring maximum concentricity with minimum total run-out.

Fast manual access movement (singular or simultaneous) provided by an ergonomic handle for an extremely smooth motion along the X- and Z- axes, with a simultaneous locking mechanism.

KPT/Speroni's SVS true vision system, with its proprietary sub-pixel analysis software provides resolution of less than 0.000039" (1 micron).

It also features an acquisition speed five times faster than other optical tool inspection systems KPT/Speroni PC-based tool management Data Bank, complete with 19" monitor, mouse and keyboard. Brand name PCs come with the original manufacturer's three-year warranty. By pressing a "measure" button, the system will automatically measure the tool tip and/or the complete tool geometry and print a customizable inspection certificate, all without human intervention.

Turn and turn/turn broaching certification and set-up package. This powerful software package provides a picture guided, user friendly programming wizard allowing for the most accurate and repeatable way to inspect turn and turn/turn broaching cutters.

Optional Episcopy front light with adjustable light source intensity that allows manual inspection of the "front" of the tool tip/insert for detecting wear and/or cracks. STP-HS has a massive horizontal high precision spindle specially suited for turn and turn/turn broaching applications.

Fork truck-ready base for easy positioning of the system on any shop floor.

"The inspection process is the most secure on the market today, because it does not require any operator intervention. Users appreciate the 'friendliness' of the system, however, both in the programming phase via a short and essential mistake- free picture-guided wizard and in the eventual adjustment and set-up phase," says Andrea Speroni, president, Speroni S.p.a of America.

Digital tool sensing removes potential for error inherent in manual measurement systems that rely on the operator's eyesight and judgment to focus and align tools within the optics of a tool presetter. It assures reproducibility and precision settings, no matter which operator uses the instrument.

Speroni S.p.a. headquartered in Pavia, Italy, designs and manufactures high precision tool presetting and measurement systems, integrated systems for tool management, shop floor CMMs and vision systems. Speroni believes feedback from the market and its product users are the most important factors in its success. The company has more than 5,000 installations worldwide.

KPT/Kaiser Precision Tooling, Inc., based in the Chicago suburb of Elk Grove Village, is the U.S. subsidiary of Heinz Kaiser, Ltd., Rumlang, Switzerland, a worldwide developer and manufacturer of precision boring tools of unmatched quality for thousands of applications in metalworking. KPT/Kaiser provides a comprehensive line of setup reduction tools, tool measurement and presetting systems, and KPT/Unilock workholding systems.
