New KPT/Speroni STP-Milly Precision Tool Presetter Ergonomically Designed To Inspect Large Face Milling Cutters

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL-A new KPT/Speroni precision tool presetting and measuring system, STP-Milly, has been developed for inspection and presetting of large face milling cutters as well as standard tooling, KPT/Kaiser Precision Tooling, Inc., announced.

KPT/Speroni designed the STP-Milly for ergonomical front operation, with a front armrest for ease of use. It features complete CNC-controlled 3-axis movement for automatic and operator-independent operation that will ensure unmatched repeatability and accuracy. Its positioning accuracy is 1 micron (0.000039").

The STP-Milly comes standard as a CNC system and is available in two sizes, 500 mm (20") diameter by 500mm (20") height and 500mm (20") diameter by 1,100mm (44") height.

The STP-Milly's thermo-balanced and artificially aged pearlitic cast iron structure provides exceptional stability, rigidity, and resistance to temperature expansion to ensure that the equipment is fully isostatic and will not deform or distort over time or temperature change. This provides for added precision to measurements and increased durability. Its hardened and precision ground guideways and increased bearing surface provide smooth movement and precision along the X- and Z- axes.

When users combine the STP-Milly with KPT/Speroni B@ncaDatiInternet (BDI) software for creation of custom inspection cycles for any standard tool and the KPT/Speroni Vision System (SVS), they can easily achieve inspection certification of large milling cutters as well as standard tooling by pressing just one function key, minimizing possible errors.

Like its predecessors, this new KPT/Speroni precision tool presetting and measuring system covers the entire field of sophisticated CIM applications, including flexible manufacturing systems and manufacturing cells. Standard features of the new STP-Milly include:

A simultaneous-fit, quick-change tooling adapter system that eliminates tolerance stacking for multiple tool solutions and allows an operator to change adapters in under eight seconds. It has a pneumatically activated retention knob clamping system capable of clamping any standard size retention knob. The STP Milly also allows for the clamping of HSK tooling as well, applying a draw force of about 600 lbs. The STP Milly has an adapter mount repeatability of .0005 mm (000019"), ensuring maximum concentricity with minimum total run-out.

Fast manual access movement (singular or simultaneous) provided by an ergonomic handle for an extremely smooth motion along the X- and Z- axes, with a simultaneous locking mechanism.

With upfront controls, the machine layout is intuitive, so operators have a clear field of view of both monitors and never have to leave their chair to access any of the CNC controls. A captain style chair is included with the machine.

KPT/Speroni's SVS true vision system with its proprietary sub-pixel analysis software provides resolution of less than 0.000039" (1 micron). The SVS features an acquisition speed five times faster than other optical tool inspection systems.

KPT/Speroni PC-based tool management Data Bank (BDI), complete with two 19" monitors, mouse and keyboard. Brand name PCs come with the original manufacturer's three-year warranty. By pressing a "measure" button, the system will automatically measure the tool tip and/or the complete tool geometry and print a customizable inspection certificate. This can all be done without human intervention.

Milling certification and set-up package. This powerful software package provides a picture guided, user-friendly programming wizard allowing for the most accurate and repeatable way to inspect and preset milling or standard cutters.

Optional Episcopy front light with adjustable light source intensity that allows manual inspection of the "front" of the tool tip/insert for detecting wear and/or cracks.

A high precision vertical rotating spindle assembly that helps provide a maximum total run-out of .003 mm (.000117") @ 300mm (12") regardless of the holder type (ISO, HSK, etc.).

The STP Milly comes ready with a fork truck-ready base for easy positioning of the system on any shop floor.

"The inspection process is the most secure on the market today, because it does not require any operator intervention. Users appreciate the 'friendliness' of the system, however, both in the programming phase via a short and essential mistake-free picture-guided wizard and in the eventual adjustment and set-up phase," says Andrea Speroni, president, S.p.a. America.

The standard digital tool sensing feature removes the potential for error inherent in manual measurement systems that rely on the operator's eyesight and judgment to focus and align tools within the optics of a tool presetter. Digital tool sensing assures reproducibility and precision settings, no matter which operator uses the instrument.
