Three Oman C-130 Aircraft to Be Upgraded with Rockwell Collins Flight2 Integrated Avionics System Running on LynuxWorks LynxOS-178 Real-time Operating System

SAN JOSE,CA — LynuxWorks, Inc., a world leader in the embedded software market, announced the LynxOS-178 real-time operating system (RTOS) will be used in the Rockwell Collins Flight2 avionics management system. The deployment of the Rockwell Collins Flight2 avionics system will be for the Royal Air Force of Omans C-130 upgrade program.

The Rockwell Collins Flight2 avionics system will provide the Royal Air Force of Oman C-130 aircraft with unrestricted access to global airspace by meeting Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) airspace requirements that are currently identified. Included in the avionics upgrade are new primary flight displays, state-of-the-art flight management system, autopilot, communication radios, navigation sensors and surveillance systems including MultiScan Hazard Detection Weather Radar, Traffic Alert Collision Avoidance System, Terrain Awareness and Warning System and digital map. The upgrade of the three planes will provide the Oman Air Force with state-of-the-art capabilities consistent with the world's leading C-130 operators.

The use of LynxOS-178 in the Rockwell Collins Flight2 system is the latest example of its pedigree in critical avionics flight deck programs, stated Robert Day, VP of LynuxWorks, Inc. This is a testament that an open standards-based operating system can help maximize software reuse in airborne systems and can significantly reduce the time and cost of platform development and its subsequent certification.

Aircraft installation and integration will be performed by ST Aerospace, the prime contractor for this upgrade program, at its facility in Singapore.

Standards-Based Approach for Reuse LynxOS-178 addresses system developers' need to meet FAA certification by providing a time, space and resource partitioned commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) operating system that fully satisfies the objectives of the DO- 178B, level A and the ARINC 653 standard as well as full conformance with the IEEE POSIX standard. Because of its modular design, LynxOS-178 is currently the only RTOS to have been awarded a Reusable Software Component (RSC) by the FAA. The combination of LynxOS-178?s open standards API (POSIX), which allows for application re-use, and the RSC that allows for certification re-use, significantly reduces the time-to-deployment for safety-critical avionics systems. The RSC acceptance letter from the FAA for LynxOS-178 can be used to support virtually any FAA Technical Standard Order.

About LynxOS-178 RTOS

LynxOS-178 is a COTS RTOS that fully satisfies the objectives of the DO- 178B level A specification and meets requirements for Integrated Modular Avionics developers. LynxOS-178 delivers the security and real-time responsiveness needed for safety-critical systems and provides a low-risk path to DO-178B certification for developers to meet the technical requirements in the production of software for airborne systems. In addition, LynxOS-178 provides full POSIX conformance, enabling developers to take advantage of the time-to-market and investment-protection benefits of open standards-based development. The powerful formula of DO-178B certification and POSIX conformance allows developers to meet the most stringent requirements for real-time safety-critical applications while at the same time ensure application portability, software reuse and interoperability between embedded systems.
