Three Magnetic Drill Models Span Versatile Fabricating Performance

Hougen Manufacturing demonstrated three of its portable magnetic drill models at IMTS 2006, displaying a wide ranging versatility for holemaking in all types of applications in the shop, for large workpieces, and for remote on-site repairs, erections and installations. The three drill units include the Hougen®;HMD925 Power Feed; the HMD904 for general purpose work; and the HMD150 low profile rescue drill for working in confined spaces. The three models offer the performance to make hole drilling faster, easier, safer and with cost savings for shorter cycle times, more holes per tool, and more holes per hour or shift.

First, the HMD925 with power feed and heavy-duty hole making capability for high volume drilling applications. The new drill unit uses Hougen's Rotabroach® tools to produce holes from 7/16" to 1-1/4" diameter thru materials up to 2" thick using the power feed option. Maximum capacity using manual feed operation is an impressive 1-1/2" diameter and 2" depth of cut. The unit is compact, measuring just 17-1/8" H x 10-13/16" W x 11-3/16"L, and the drill is lightweight at 37 lbs., or about 19% lighter than power feed models of comparable holemaking capacity. Additionally, it is more economical with costs said to be nearly 20% less then competitive units.

The HMD925 incorporates solid-state circuitry that monitors and adjusts the self-feed
action to continuously maintain optimum drilling performance throughout the entire length of cut. This helps to provide predictable productivity, long tool life and lower tooling costs, and excellent hole quality in both dimensional and finish aspects. The magnetic base of the HMD925 measures 3-1/8" W x 6-9/16" L and develops 1680 lb. of dead lift strength and 900 lb. drillpoint breakaway force on 1" thick plate.

The HMD904 incorporates design and construction features that help in offering low weight with a high power rating to drill large holes without stalling, and, with a compact size make this unit ideal for a wide range of work projects.

The HMD904 weighs just 27.5 lbs., measures 16-7/16"H x 7-3/16"W x 8-1/4" long yet provides drilling capacities of up to 1-1/2" diameter and 2" depth of cut. The powerful magnetic base provides 1680 lb. dead lift and 900 lb. drill point breakaway force rating tested on 1" thick plate (1124 lb. and 741 lb on 3/8" plate). The drill has a U.S. made motor with an electrical rating of 115V, 60Hz and 7.2 Amp that helps maintain cutting speeds and feeds for deep holes, large diameter holes and holes in tough alloys.

Rear mounted, accessible controls and a side-to-side reversible feed handle configuration enhance the unit's ergonomics and ease of use.

The HMD150 is small enough to drill in places where even hand held electric drills can't go, yet with the power to cut holes up to 1-3/8" diameter thru materials up to 1" thick...two, three, even more times faster than conventional drills and twist drill bits. Featuring a Quick Release tool mounting system and a height of just 7-13/16" (6-1/2"W x 11-11/16"L), this drill is for fast, efficient holemaking in tight spots.

The HMD150 weighs just 22.7 lb. and has an electric rating of 120V, 50/60 Hz. The quiet 7.2 Amp motor operates from any standard 115/120 volt power source and develops 450 no-load rpm. The magnetic base has a powerful 1,200 lb. dead lift rating on 3/8" plate and 2165 lb. on 1" plate.

The HMD150 has a rigid quill feed, which prevents tool vibration, eliminates gibs, slide/way adjustments and maintenance while providing a constant low profile.

Hougen also produces 11 other models of portable magnetic drills with capacities to 3-1/16" diameter and 3" depth of cut. Additional products offered include a complete line of individual and kit-packaged annular cutters for portable drilling and stationary machine tools, cutters specifically designed for sheet metal and plate work, plus Punch-ProTM Electro-hydraulic, single-body and easy-to-use hole punchers with associated tooling.
