Thin-Film, Center-Tapped Resistors Provide <0.1 pF Shunt Capacitance, -20-dB Low-Noise Operation for High Performance in Test and Measurement Systems

MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA - May 12, 2003 - A new thin-film, center-tapped, dual-value resistor that enables more flexible hybrid circuit designs was announced today by Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH).

The CTQ resistor chip, which measures just 0.030 in. by 0.030 in., provides low shunt capacitance of <0.1 pF and low-noise operation for high performance in hybrid circuits for test and measurement systems.

The versatile new resistor chip from Vishay Electro-Films gives the user three value choices - total value, one-half value, or one-quarter value - depending on the wire-bond configuration, while six bonding pads enhance layout flexibility.

Each CTQ chip manufactured through Vishay's sophisticated thin-film manufacturing process features a high-stability, self-passivating and moisture-resistant tantalum nitride resistor element and a quartz substrate.

CTQ resistors offer a wide resistance range of 10 Ohm to 1 MOhm, and at lower power levels can provide lower shunt capacitance than is available in silicon-based resistors. Tight tolerance values down to 0.1% are available, with TCR values from ±25 ppm/°C to ±100 ppm/°C. TCR tracking between resistor halves is ±2 ppm/°C, and center tap ratio tolerance is available to ±0.1%. The resistor features a typical noise figure of -35 dB in a 100-Ohm to 250-kOhm range and just -20 dB at values <100 Ohm or >251 kOhm. The new device provides a maximum operating voltage of 200 V, a dielectric breakdown voltage of 400 V, and a 60-mW DC power rating at +70°C.

Electrically tested and visually inspected to MIL-STD-883, CTQ resistors feature resistance to thermal shock and high-temperature exposure and are specified for an operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. They are suitable for use with other Vishay products including wire-bondable capacitor chips, inductor chips, user-trim resistor chips, and other quartz parts such as QFM, QFN, and QFX single-value resistor chips.

Samples of the CTQ resistor chips are available now, with lead times of 14 weeks for production quantities. Pricing for U.S. delivery in 1,000-piece quantities is $0.72.
