Thermocouple Input Module Expands Capabilities of Allen-Bradley MicroLogix(TM) 1200 Controller

Broad interface capabilities of the 1762-IT4 Thermocouple/mV input module reduce inventory costs and deliver greater application flexibility

MILWAUKEE, Oct. 14, 2002 - Complete automation leader Rockwell Automation has introduced a new interface module that allows users to directly connect Allen-Bradley MicroLogix(TM) 1200 controllers to any of nine types of thermocouple temperature sensors or millivolt sensors. The 1762-IT4 Thermocouple/mV input module enhances the capability of the MicroLogix 1200 controller by expanding the application spectrum that can be addressed by a single module.

"Our customers are looking to simplify and streamline the number of devices required for small machine control," said Mike Foley, product marketing manager, Rockwell Automation. "By eliminating the need for expensive thermocouple transmitters, the 1762-IT4 input module enables MicroLogix 1200 users to achieve a cost-effective and compact means of temperature measurement and control."

The four-channel module is compatible with existing MicroLogix 1200 controllers and requires no updates to hardware, firmware, or software. It is also capable of accepting millivolt signals from devices, such as strain gauges, that are not within the application window of standard analog modules. This reduces training requirements as well as the need to stock several modules to interface with thermocouples. In addition, each channel of the module can use a different type of thermocouple or millivolt sensor.

The module offers excellent accuracy, ranging from +/-.5 C to +/-7.5 C depending on thermocouple input type. It is factory-calibrated and can be programmed to perform auto calibration on a cyclical or noncyclical basis to maintain accuracy. A choice of filter frequencies also is available, allowing users to select the input filter that best meets the environmental conditions of the application.

The 1762-IT4 module provides diagnostic feedback to the controller for open circuit and out-of-range detection. This simplifies troubleshooting and machine operation and allows users to take corrective action based on the condition. Each channel can be individually configured using Rockwell Software RSLogix(TM) 500 programming software. User-friendly configuration screens allow for choice of thermocouple type, filtering frequency, data format, and status data best suited for the application. On-module scaling to engineering units eliminates the need to perform scaling in the control program, saving controller memory and improving performance.
