Thermo Ships its 2000th M Series Atomic Absorption Spectrometer

CAMBRIDGE, UK (October 20, 2005) - Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE: TMO) announces the 2000th customer order of its M Series Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS). Since it was first introduced, the instrument has set a new standard of performance in flame and furnace analyses. This landmark order has been accompanied by the publishing of a new application note, which details the instrument's operation and the inherent benefits to users.

Using a single atomizer instrument requires at least two critical alignment procedures in order to change over from flame to furnace atomizers. This process is difficult, time consuming and involves the risk of data quality deterioration. Featuring an award winning, unique design, Thermo's M Series AAS enables laboratories, especially those performing high throughput experiments, to carry out both flame and graphite furnace AAS analyses. Moreover, a variety of combinations of atomizers is possible providing further flexibility and enabling optimum configuration. In addition, the instrument's unique ergonomic design results in laboratory space savings and ease of installation and operation.

The M Series AAS achieves top quality data in a short timeframe. The unique opto-mechanical arrangement of the instrument allows the atomizers to switch automatically, simply by the flip of a mirror, thereby enabling fast and unattended operation. The M Series AAS can be easily controlled from a single data station using the innovative SOLAAR software package. The instruments are equipped with unique energy-saving Stockdale Double beam optics that achieve true double beam background correction and single beam optical efficiency for the measurement.

In addition, the graphite furnace TV (GFTV) provides high definition images of events inside the furnace cuvette allowing monitoring of the sample injection and the dry and ash phases of the furnace program. Thermo offers a completely automated flame AA package with the M Series AAS, which can also be combined with the ID 100 Flame Autodilutor System. The ID100 allows dilution of 0 - 100 times with accuracy better than 2%.
