Thermo Fisher Scientific Customer Wins Packaging Line of the Year Award

Thermo Scientific's Ramsey AC9Rx checkweigher is key to Green Mountain's successful project

MINNEAPOLIS, MN, (November 15, 2006)- Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, today announced that a Thermo Scientific checkweigher customer, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, has received the 2006 Packaging Line of the Year award by Packaging Machinery Technology magazine. Green Mountain accepted the award during a ceremony at the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI) PACK EXPO International 2006 conference in Chicago.

As sales of Green Mountain's coffee-filled 'K-Cups' accelerated, the company initiated a project to install a packaging line that not only increased the output of its single-serve, ready-to-prepare canisters of coffee, but also one that enabled the line to resume operations with minimal disruption. Green Mountain chose Thermo Scientific's Ramsey AC9Rx as the checkweigher for this project because of its ability to run small packages at high speeds with exceptional accuracy.

"As demand for our coffee-filled 'K-Cups' skyrocketed, it was critical for Green Mountain to implement a streamlined checkweighing process with very little disruption to our production," said Jason King, engineering manager for Green Mountain. "One of the key factors behind our success was finding OEMs who could work together in a team environment. By working with vendors such as Thermo Fisher Scientific, we were able to complete the project ahead of schedule and below budget."

Through a collaborative effort with Packaging Technologies, Inc., Thermo Scientific's Ramsey AC9000Rx was integrated into Green Mountain's packaging line. The checkweigher continuously monitors weight trends on the packaging line and sends signals to the filler to ensure accuracy in filling. Thanks in part to this monitoring, Green Mountain was able to break even on its packaging line investment in just two months and increase overall productivity.

"Green Mountain, like many companies in the food and beverage industries, is always looking to improve line rate and accuracy on its packaging line, and we are pleased that they selected Thermo Scientific's checkweighers to help meet this challenge," said Martin Lymn, product manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific. "We congratulate Green Mountain and Packaging Technologies on their achievements and the recent award from PMMI, and we are proud to be part of this successful project."
