NEC Electronics America adds Four TFT Color LCD Modules to Industrial Display Portfolio

New 12.1-Inch Module with Ultra-High Luminance Ideal for Applications With Touch Screens and High Ambient Light

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 13 -- Demonstrating its commitment to provide innovative liquid crystal display (LCD) products for industrial applications, NEC Electronics America, Inc. today introduced to the Americas four new amorphous-silicon, thin-film transistor (TFT) LCD modules from NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. With high brightness levels, high contrast ratios, wide viewing angles and wide operating temperature ranges, the new color displays are ideal for use in automatic vending machines, point-of-sale (POS) systems, gas station screens and navigation systems. One product, the new 12.1-inch super video graphics array (SVGA) module, part number NL8060BC31-36, achieves one of the highest luminance levels of any industrial-type color TFT-LCD module, 1100 candelas per square meter (cd/m(2)).

It also operates at temperatures between -10 degrees to +70 degrees Celsius and employs a highly efficient, high-intensity backlight system that enables the display of vivid colors in high ambient light, such as sunny outdoor light or direct indoor sunlight. Even with the addition of the touch panel, the module still offers a high level of brightness.

"Designers of industrial display applications must overcome many challenges to preserve visibility in high ambient light conditions," said Dr. Shigehiko Satoh, associate vice president and general manager, displays strategic business unit, NEC Electronics America. "By combining the innovative technologies of NEC LCD Technologies with the market know-how we have acquired throughout our long history of serving the industrial market, we are able to offer TFT-LCD modules that can operate in a wide range of problematic viewing and temperature environments."

The other three new modules include another 12.1-inch SVGA module (part number NL8060BC31-42D), an 8.4-inch SVGA module (part number NL6448BC21-04) and a 7-inch-wide quarter video graphics array (WQVGA) module (part number NL4823BC37-05). Each offers a high brightness level of 400 cd/m(2), high contrast ratio of 600:1, wide viewing angle of 160 degrees horizontally and 140 degrees vertically, fast response time of 25 milliseconds (ms) and wide operating temperature range of -20 degrees to +70 degrees Celsius.

Further, the 7-inch WQVGA module specifically targets emerging industrial applications, such as test and measurement equipment and global positioning systems (GPS) that require a wide viewing angle and wide aspect ratio. LCD modules with these characteristics have long been used in personal computer and television applications to display more information than is possible with a standard aspect ratio. Industrial designers today are adopting this technology to display information such as documents, maps and enhanced user interface schemes.
