Original Press Release:

IBM Rational Functional Tester V6.1 - Increase Tester Productivity

Overview
Rational® Functional Tester V6.1 introduces new support for test authoring and modification within the Microsoft® Visual Studio .NET IDE using Microsoft Visual Basic .NET as the test script language.

Formerly known as IBM Rational Functional Tester for Java® and Web, Rational Functional Tester is an advanced, automated functional and regression testing tool for testers and GUI developers who need superior control for testing Java, VS.NET, and Web-based applications. New features extend technology support, simplify tool adoption, and increase tester productivity.

A significant new capability is support for test authoring and modification within the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET IDE using Microsoft Visual Basic .NET as the test script language. Combined with existing support for Java-based test scripts hosted within an Eclipse-based editor, Rational Functional Tester
offers a choice of mainstream test development environments.

This power and flexibility is crucial for any test team looking to achieve more with their tests than record-and-playback activities. In parallel with support for recording and editing tests within Visual Studio .NET is brand new support for testing Visual Studio.NET WinForm and WebForm applications. Teams working in mixed Java, Web, and .NET technology environments can now standardize on Rational Functional Tester for their test automation efforts. Additional support for testing 3270 and 5250 terminal-based applications is available using the Rational Functional Tester Extension for Terminal-based Applications (sold separately).

To improve ease of use and productivity, a variety to test maintenance and customization activities have been automated. Capabilities include:
· Data-driven test wizards to automatically flag values entered by the user and returned by the application under test in preparation for data-driven testing in which constants are replaced with variable values during test execution. Such testing can be used to more accurately reflect true user
environments.
· Spreadsheet-like datapool editor to reduce the time spent defining values and value ranges accessed during data-driven testing.
· Improved object map refactoring features such as filtering and global search and replace to simplify the inevitable map updates used to account for changes in the user interfaces of applications under test.

Key prerequisites
Refer to the Hardware requirements and Software requirements sections.

Planned availability dates
· December 3, 2004 (electronic software delivery)
· January 7, 2005 (media and documentation)
