Rohde & Schwarz Develops the World's First Conformance Test System for MediaFLO

ORLANDO, Fla., March 27 -- CTIA Wireless 2007 -- Rohde & Schwarz, the leading international manufacturer of test and measurement equipment, has announced the release of the world's first conformance test system capable of evaluating mobile handset compliance with MediaFLO(TM), a global mobile entertainment platform from QUALCOMM Incorporated that enables the broadcasting of high-quality video, audio, Clipcasting(TM) media and IP datacasting streams to mobile handsets. Rohde & Schwarz's new TU8980 FDCS - FLO(TM) Device Conformance System, available in Q1 2007, will enable manufacturers to evaluate their handsets for compliance with the MediaFLO minimum performance specifications published by the TIA as well as any additional performance requirements emphasized by service providers.

Unlike existing technologies, MediaFLO technology enables service providers to offer mobile entertainment services of unprecedented quality to their subscribers. The TU8980 system will not only test the functionality of MediaFLO technology on handsets, but also analyze its capability to coexist with existing mobile communication infrastructures. Compatibility testing with services such as E911, A-GPS, Verizon Wireless' 1xEV-DO high speed data service and Bluetooth communication are emphasized.

"Rohde & Schwarz expands the MediaFLO ecosystem with comprehensive test solutions needed for large scale development and manufacturing of MediaFLO-capable handsets," said Michael Coad, vice president of vendor relations for QUALCOMM's MediaFLO Technologies. "Momentum continues to build for MediaFLO, and the availability of commercial test solutions is essential."

Built using a powerful combination of test instruments, including the R&S(R) CMU200 Universal Radio Communication Tester and the R&S(R) SFU Broadcast Test System, a comprehensive package of test signals and measurement features results in very high reliability and repeatability in the evaluation of both the communications and the mobile TV components of handsets. The flexibility of the R&S(R) CMU200 and R&S(R) SFU ensures that, despite differences and changes in the global telecommunication landscape, the TU8980 will remain up-to-date and able to handle the industry's testing requirements.

Working in close conjunction with QUALCOMM, Rohde & Schwarz has developed a system that will be available as a full conformance test system for FLO I, and that will serve as a baseline for mobile phone manufacturers and providers to test their networks and devices to the MediaFLO standard. The TU8980 FDCS can be extended for FLO II and FLO III to test for conformity with advanced services and features, as well as provide for device certification. A special engineering version of the TU8980 will also be available.
