JDSU Unveils Wireless Backhaul Test and Monitoring Solution at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2008

Only Integrated System for Migration from TDM to Ethernet to Help Satisfy Service Level Agreements, Increase Operational Efficiency

Milpitas, California, June 16, 2008 - JDSU today launched a comprehensive assurance solution enabling network operators to manage reliable performance wireless backhaul issues and ensuring the Ethernet technology closely associated with the success of next generation backhaul performs reliably. The all-in-one NetComplete system helps operators migrate from today's Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) switched circuit environment to Ethernet/IP technology, and to meet the stringent service performance requirements to which backhaul providers must adhere.

Wireless backhaul, or the high-speed point-to-point connectivity between base-station controllers (BSC) and an aggregation point or hub, has become a priority issue from both a cost and service performance perspective for wireless carriers. Ensuring high-quality service standards are met during the transition from TDM to Ethernet, as well as decreasing backhaul costs, are among service providers' top concerns.

The solution - made up of NetComplete, which includes OSS software, the QT-600 Ethernet probe, and CENTEST 650, as well as other leading JDSU Ethernet test portables such as the HST-3000 triple-play services handheld tester - gives operators full reach into the network. It also provides end-to-end service turn-up and performance monitoring that is standards-compliant and helps eliminate potential issues related to network element interoperability and upgrade. JDSU will exhibit its wireless backhaul and business class Ethernet test solutions at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Philadelphia, June 24-27, booth # 543.

"The JDSU wireless backhaul test solution lets operators seamlessly keep pace with next generation backhaul systems and successfully manage the transition from TDM to Ethernet, leveraging our leading Ethernet test capabilities and service assurance systems that provide full monitoring and troubleshooting," said Jerry Gentile, vice president in JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "Operators need end-to-end visibility in the network to quickly identify problems, decrease mean-time-to-repair and avoid SLA penalties."

According to a recent study published by Infonetics Research, mobile operators and backhaul transport providers are expected to spend $8.2 billion on mobile first-mile backhaul equipment in 2010. The study cites continued growth of mobile subscribers, competitive pressures for better quality and new services, as well as the on-going proliferation of bandwidth needs as key factors.

This solution allows JDSU to work cooperatively with many technical partners and their solutions, including interoperability with Accedian's EtherNID(TM) and MetroNID(TM) for demarc packet assurance and advanced performance testing.

JDSU is also making publicly available its new white paper, "Next Generation Cellular Backhaul: A Review of Today's Most Critical Real-World Issues and the Methodologies Used to Combat Them," authored by Andrew Sachs, JDSU director of solutions strategy for wireless backhaul, who will be presenting the paper at the SCTE Expo on June 26 and 27. Sachs is also participating in a mobile backhaul panel at NXTcomm08, Las Vegas, on June 18 (JDSU is exhibiting at booth #SL1316).
