Rockwell Automation Expands Terminal Block Offering With New Wiring Options and Accessories

New Allen-Bradley® terminal block line uses innovative connection technology to reduce installation time and conserve panel space

MILWAUKEE, Nov. 12, 2002 - To meet the evolving needs of wiring speed and efficiency for panel builders, OEMs and end users worldwide, Rockwell Automation has expanded its Allen-Bradley® terminal block offering with a new line of time-saving terminals and wiring accessories. Designed to speed routine wiring installation and increase connection reliability, the Allen-Bradley Insulation Displacement Connection (IDC) terminal block line addresses a number of common issues, such as electrical isolation, connection of small control wires and shock and vibration.

These new terminal blocks save wiring time by eliminating the need to strip the wire insulation before termination. The wire is simply cut to length, inserted into the terminal block, and terminated by a simple motion of the screwdriver. The wire insulation is thus "displaced", hence the name Insulation Displacement Connection. No special tools are required.

"Because it is fast and secure, Insulation Displacement Connection technology is becoming accepted in more and more industrial applications," said Keith Cumiskey, product manager, Rockwell Automation. "This technology enhancement and product
accessories help OEMs and panel builders reduce installation time by not having to strip the wire's insulation and improve connection reliability with a two-part spring and cutting assembly, while maintaining wide application flexibility."

The IDC product line offers several wiring options. The Feed-through and ground blocks, in two, three and four termination versions up to # 14 awg, are used in most common wiring applications. The Dual-level blocks allow two independent circuits to be terminated in the same panel width as a single terminal block, saving panel space. An additional version provides a common connection between the two levels, providing the most compact four-termination wiring solution available. The Electronic component blocks, diode and surge suppressors, are used for protecting sensitive electronic circuits.

The Fuse and Knife Disconnect blocks offer control circuit protection and isolation, allowing quick and easy troubleshooting. The Hybrid blocks address end user's concern about acceptance of the field side termination by offering an IDC connection on one side and screw connection on the other side.

Rockwell Automation also has added a full line of accessories to complement this new product line, including end barriers, center jumpers, test plugs, fuse plugs, markers, protective stops (for small gauge wires), and a wire cutter that attaches to a standard screwdriver.

Available for implementations worldwide, the IDC terminal blocks have received UL recognition, CSA, IEC and CE certification. They are available now and can be purchased through Rockwell Automation's worldwide network of Allen-Bradley distributors.
