Original Press Release:

Emerson's Rosemount 3144P Is Industry's First Safety-Certified Temperature Transmitter With Simple Conversion Option

Safety certification and field proven temperature measurement are available in one scalable platform, simplifying safety compliance and reducing customer costs

AUSTIN, TEXAS (June 9, 2004) Emerson Process Management announces the addition of safety certification per IEC 61508 to the Rosemount 3144P temperature transmitter. Now existing 3144P users can upgrade to a safety certified transmitter by simply replacing the standard electronics assembly with a safety certified assembly.

The 3144P transmitters are components of Emerson's new smart safety instrumented system (SIS), an integrated solution that extends the innovations of its proven PlantWeb. digital plant architecture. Within the smart SIS, the transmitters are integrated with safety-certified final control elements and safety systems in unique, digital intelligent safety loops that enable users to implement safer plants. The 3144P transmitter for safety systems uses the same basic design and innovations as those used in the PlantWeb® architecture solutions for mainstream Basic Process Control System automation. For example, diagnostics within the transmitter provide predictive unit and process health data that is delivered as needed for improving safety or mainstream control using HART® communications protocol.

Utilizing the certified 3144P devices in safety instrumented systems, users can more easily comply with the new IEC61508/61511 standards and minimize the costly documentation and analysis efforts associated with the alternative prior-use methodology. With safety certification built on the foundation of the field proven 3144P, users now benefit from industry leading reliability and performance in their critical safety applications. By using the same transmitter in both basic process control and safety critical applications, users can eliminate duplicate training, maintenance, and inventory costs.

To improve plant safety, the Rosemount 3144P goes beyond certification to the new IEC61508 safety standard. The required test interval is stretched to 5 years, enabling considerable maintenance cost savings. The Rosemount 3144P comes with both single and dual sensor input capabilities, which are factory and field configurable. The addition of device and process diagnostics increases the reliability of the temperature measurement and provides operational savings.

The Hot Backup® feature in a dual sensor configuration protects the user's investment by automatically switching to the backup sensor if the primary sensor fails, providing affordable sensor redundancy. The Sensor Drift Alert feature notifies the user if an unreliable measurement is detected, allowing time for the degrading sensor to be replaced before failure.

Transmitter-sensor matching improves temperature measurement accuracy by 75%. Enhanced EMI rejection and filtering results in unmatched process measurement stability. With 5-year stability for lower maintenance costs and a dual-compartment housing for outstanding reliability in harsh applications, the 3144P is a proven and reliable solution for all critical safety applications.

The Rosemount 3144P temperature transmitter is one component of Emerson's smart SIS solution that includes safety-loops made by integrating Emerson's sensors, safety systems, final control elements and software. Engineered with the help of Emerson safety professionals, the safety solutions enable safer facilities, streamlined compliance, and life-cycle cost savings from engineering, through operations and maintenance.

The 3144P temperature transmitter is part of a broad range of intelligent field devices that power Emerson's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture to improve plant efficiency by 2% and more through delivering asset optimization, process automation, and management execution. Further cost savings, increased plant availability, and enhanced safety and environmental compliance are achieved when the transmitters are integrated into the PlantWeb architecture.
