Watlow's SERIES DX DeviceNet(TM) Temperature Transmitter Delivers Smart Sensing Technology to Sensor Networks

Transmitter Offers Superior Accuracy, Simplified Installation and Reduced System Cost

St. Louis - Watlow, a St. Louis-based provider of thermal components and solutions, brings smart sensing technology capabilities to sensor networks with the introduction of its new SERIES DX DeviceNet(TM) Temperature Transmitter, a compact, four-channel, DIN mounted unit. The SERIES DX is highly accurate, simplifies the installation process, reduces total installation costs and is the only IEEE 1451.4 smart sensing technology standard compliant device capable of collecting, converting and broadcasting temperature sensor data over a DeviceNet network.

"Companies will greatly benefit from this new technology through improved yield and process quality in their manufacturing operations. The SERIES DX Transmitter enables new Plug and Play sensor technology that delivers three to four times greater accuracy and three times less sensor drift, which saves operating and maintenance costs," said Chris Seymour, sensor strategic marketing manager for Watlow.

Each SERIES DX DeviceNet Temperature Transmitter is individually tested and calibrated for optimum accuracy and allows all of the latest sensor technologies based on the IEEE 1451.4 protocol to be accessible to most programmable logic controllers, networks and LabVIEW(TM) applications.

Up to 63 SERIES DX DeviceNet Temperature Transmitters can be grouped together, which allows over 250 temperature sensors to be networked on a single DeviceNet cable, depending on desired network speed. This simplifies the installation process and reduces the cost of wiring labor and input hardware.

The DeviceNet network powers the transmitter, so there are no additional costs associated with adding additional power supplies or cabinet space. The units' power consumption is also low (up to 252 sensors can be installed using 63 cascaded
transmitters on one DeviceNet network run) and because the unit is small, smaller or fewer enclosures can be used - lowering the enclosure costs per channel.

Any combination of standard or Plug and Play IEEE 1451.4 standard or non-standard RTDs and thermocouples can be used with the SERIES DX. The transmitter is network and rotary switch configurable, allowing for greater flexibility and timesavings during the installation process. It is also hot swappable - there is no need to shut down the network to remove, reconfigure or add adjoining transmitters.

Additional features include bright, legible status LEDs for channel and network status, automatic DIN-rail grounding and a writable front cover for easy identification. The SERIES DX is particularly suitable for use with machine tools that carry multiple sensors, such as furnaces, baking equipment or wafer fabs, and it is well suited to customers that already run the DeviceNet network in their factory.

Watlow currently offers two sensor families that use the new IEEE 1451.4 technology: INFOSENSE-P(TM), a high accuracy version of its standard RTDs and thermocouples; and WATCOUPLE Thermocouples, a long-life, high accuracy, high temperature Plug and Play IEEE 1451.4 smart nonstandard family of thermocouples.
