Press Release Summary:
Designed and characterized for high-resolution rotary shadow casting of large organic molecules, Vitua® eliminates process-inherent guesswork and trial and error by automating complicated process. System deposits 1–3 nm tungsten contrast layer via thermal evaporation, which removes need to stain sample, and process times are <20 min typ. Users can apply recommended process parameters or program time, power, and other parameters to meet unique requirements.

Denton Vacuum Introduces Vitua, the First Automated TEM Sample Preparation System for the Life Sciences
MOORESTOWN, N.J. -- Denton Vacuum, LLC, a leading manufacturer of thin film technology products, has introduced Vitua, the first automated TEM sample preparation system specifically designed and characterized for high resolution rotary shadow casting of large organic molecules.
TEM organic molecule imaging presents unique challenges. Small samples, such as DNA or complex proteins, are difficult to image using traditional staining techniques. Moreover, TEM processing inevitably degrades stained samples making follow-up characterization impossible.
Denton Vacuum's Vitua(®) system resolves many of the problems with traditional organic molecule imaging by enabling successful, consistent, high resolution rotary shadow casting.
"Up until now, one barrier preventing the use of high resolution rotary shadow casting on organic molecules has been the need to deposit thin, consistent metal layers onto the sample specimen. To accomplish this, users have had to modify their deposition equipment and then spend significant time and effort to develop the expertise to assure good results,"explains Vince McGinty, President of Denton Vacuum. "Vitua includes proven processes that eliminate the guesswork and the trial and error associated with high resolution rotary shadow casting. Our new system automates a complicated process, removes a steep learning curve, and ensures successful, consistent and repeatable results."
Designed, built and supported by Denton Vacuum, the world leader in thin film microscopy sample preparation, Vitua streamlines TEM sample preparation and opens up this technique for wider use in organic molecule imaging.
