Tellabs Enables Ethernet on the Tellabs®1000 Multiservice Access Series

New Gigabit Ethernet card provides smooth migration

NAPERVILLE, Ill., April 3 / -- Tellabs is offering a new solution to quickly and cost-effectively migrate existing Tellabs® 1000 multiservice access series networks to Ethernet. Tellabs' new Gigabit Ethernet card enables service providers to meet users' increasing demands for higher speed Internet Protocol (IP)-based services, such as Internet access and IPTV, over a single system.

Service providers want to offer revenue-generating IP-based services while getting the most out of their current infrastructures. The new Gigabit Ethernet card enables service providers to migrate their DSL and PON-based networks to IP. Service providers can remove older ATM switches and use less expensive, yet still reliable, Ethernet infrastructure. Instead of requiring a forklift upgrade, the Tellabs 1000 series requires only a Gigabit Ethernet card and a software upgrade.

"More than 800 service providers use the Tellabs 1000 series," said Carl DeWilde, executive vice president of broadband products for Tellabs. "The addition of the Gigabit Ethernet card gives them greater flexibility to meet users' demands for fast, high-quality services."

BEK Communications, a telecommunications cooperative serving 6,000 customers in south central North Dakota, is among the first service providers to trial the Gigabit Ethernet card. A long-time user of the Tellabs 1000 series, BEK will use the card to deploy IPTV in mid-2007.

"With the new functionality and features that Tellabs has built into the Tellabs 1000 series, BEK is able to extend the life of our existing infrastructure," said Tom Steinolfson, Network Manager at BEK Communications. "With these new features, Tellabs enables us to deliver the advanced services we need for our customers."

The Tellabs 1000 series is part of the Tellabs® DynamicHome(SM) solution, which enables service providers to deliver advanced video, voice and data services to residences and businesses. The Gigabit Ethernet card and software will be generally available this month.
