telent in Record Breaking Transport for London (TfL) Traffic Signals Project

LONDON -- Pioneering technology services company, telent Technology Services Ltd, has won a record contract worth well over GBP100m as part of a major award from Transport for London (TfL). The overall contract is an eight-year agreement, apportioned to 3 suppliers, that will see the capital's 6,000 traffic signals upgraded and maintained to the latest, greenest standards. telent's contract is believed to be the largest single traffic signal supply and maintenance contract ever awarded in the UK.

telent, with operations throughout London and the rest of the UK, will supply, install and maintain all traffic control equipment in the West and South West of London, making it responsible for 49% of London's entire traffic signal estate. telent will help expand the use of intelligent traffic signals, as well as new crossings for pedestrians and cyclists - all helping to deliver benefits to road users across this part of London.

"Winning this contract is a tremendous moment for telent and builds on our growing capability and reputation for world class levels of commitment, support and know-how," said Chris Metcalfe, Managing Director Technology Solutions at telent. "It positions us as a key technology services supplier to TfL's Surface Transport Directorate in what is undoubtedly a flagship contract anywhere within the Urban Traffic Industry. It is also a great acknowledgement for our people - who have tremendous pride and dedication in what they do - their individual efforts and track record have all contributed to making this possible."

Transport for London said that the contracts were part of a doubling of the investment into London's road network - from GBP2bn to GBP4bn - and the contracts would deliver a saving of around GBP42m compared to other contracts.

Dana Skelley, Director of Asset Management at TfL, said: "London is world-leading when it comes to traffic signals management and our new contracts will allow us to remain at the cutting edge of traffic control technology. We have a range of works planned to improve traffic signals across London and we look forward to working hard with our partners to implement them."

This is the latest success for telent, who only recently announced that it had won three prestigious five year contracts worth over GBP15million with the Highways Agency, to maintain critical roadside technology across the East, South East and M25 regions' motorways and trunk roads.

This marked the first time a company had been awarded contracts for three regions at once - the most the Highways Agency is able to grant to any one company at a time. telent completed rapid and successful mobilisation of the project within nine weeks, including the TUPE transfer of people from three different incumbent providers, and now manages all routine and reactive maintenance for over 12,000 technology assets, such as emergency roadside telephones, message signs, traffic signal sites, the Highways Agency weather stations, CCTV cameras, tunnels and many more.
