TE's Mini-SAS Cables Perform to 6Gb/S SAS Specifications

-- Cables tested in large SAS systems build at Plugfest -- HARRISBURG, Pa. - Tyco Electronics offers Mini-Serial Attached SCSI (Mini-SAS) cable assemblies -- high-performance, cost-effective cabling solutions for high-speed serial buses supporting 4X SAS architectures. The copper cables are designed to be fully compliant with 3Gb/s SAS and 6Gb/s SAS protocols. Target product applications include mass storage systems, storage area networks and switches, servers and routers. The Mini-SAS cable assemblies were recently submitted for testing at the SCSI Trade Association (STA)-sponsored 11th Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Plugfest, held in October 2010 at the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL). Plugfest was an event held to validate the latest SAS 2.1 specification, which underlies the 6Gb/s SAS generation in supporting equipment such as servers, storage, switches, etc. as well as cable assemblies. At the event, TE tested its Mini-SAS external cables within the large system build included at Plugfest. TE tested its standard 24 AWG, 10m cable and raised the bar by also testing longer length cables (30 AWG at 5.5m, 28 AWG at 7m and 26 AWG at 8.5m) with 6Gb/s SAS signaling speeds - demonstrating its wide breadth of customized cable assembly solutions. Final test results concluded that no bit errors were detected, which indicate that TE Mini-SAS cables perform without dropped data for system builders using the 6Gb/s SAS technology. Prior to the event, internal S-parameter and near-end-crosstalk tests were conducted on the cable assemblies to meet the requirements for 6Gb/s SAS specifications. According to a STA press release, the system build was extremely successful and showed the interoperability, robustness and versatility of the SAS ecosystem. Harry Mason, President of STA and Director of Industry Marketing, LSI Corporation, said, "Active cabling is an extremely important aspect of SAS' evolution and we greatly appreciate Tyco Electronics' involvement in moving this capability forward. They have been an active participant in each of the Plugfests, and their efforts played a large role in the success of this event."
