FalconStor's VirtualTape Library Software Solution Qualifies with Leading Backup and Recovery Software Solutions

FalconStor Debuts Next Version of its VirtualTape Library Software at Storage Networking World Conference

New VTL Offers Expanded Integration Capabilities, Advanced User-Defined Policy Features and Improved Data Accessibility

STORAGE NETWORKING WORLD, PHOENIX, AZ, April 12, 2005--FalconStor Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: FALC), a leading developer of network storage software solutions, today launched the next version of its industry leading VirtualTape Library (VTL) solution, providing enhanced functionality coupled with expanded support for additional tape drives and libraries to improve integration within an existing tape library infrastructure and to minimize customer total cost of ownership.

FalconStor's unique, award-winning VTL solution, powered by the company's IPStor® Enterprise Edition software, consolidates the management of backup resources while enhancing the reliability of backup operations and accelerating the speed of recovery. The new version adds support for the StorageTek Automated Cartridge System Library Software (ACSLS), IBM 3583 Library and 3580 drives for IBM iSeries, SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 8.0, and tape library caching.

"Virtual tape libraries are gaining prominence as data volumes increase and businesses grow more dissatisfied with their current backup solutions due to cost and reliability," said Peter Gerr, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "FalconStor's VTL addresses issues of business continuity and scalability, and integrates seamlessly with popular backup applications, preserving users' investments and backup processes. The new version emulates and supports a wider range of tape libraries, offering more users the opportunity to implement the solution into their current backup environment, while helping to alleviate some of the most significant backup and data protection problems faced by IT administrators."

FalconStor's VTL software is enhanced to work with StorageTek ACSLS managed Tape Libraries for import/export operations. StorageTek ACSLS software manages tape libraries usually shared by multiple backup and tape applications. Backup servers connected to tape drives, using either SCSI or Fibre Channel, communicate with the ACSLS software over a LAN for robotic arm control and tape management. Users will be able to share ACSLS managed libraries among one or more VTL servers and other backup applications.

The tape caching feature in the new VTL provides users with the ability to migrate data from disk to tapes based on user-defined policies, while providing transparent access to data regardless of the location. Existing export capabilities are enhanced to include new policies that manage migration operations, supported on virtual tapes that use barcodes from physical tapes. "Trigger" policies determine when data from virtual tapes will be migrated to physical tapes, and "Reclamation" policies establish how storage space allocated to virtual cartridges is reclaimed after migrating to physical tapes.

FalconStor's VirtualTape Library software leverages industry standard high speed disk to provision virtual tape drives and libraries via Fibre Channel (FC), iSCSI or NDMP protocol to backup servers attached to an iSCSI/IP or FC storage area network (SAN) to maximize performance and return on investment. FalconStor's ongoing interoperability testing with leading hardware and software solutions ensures seamless integration of VTL into an existing IT environment, while optimizing the overall performance and functionality of VTL and other technologies used by FalconStor customers today.
