Tape Library provides modular, scalable solution.

Press Release Summary:

System Storage TS3310 Tape Library consists of System Storage TS3310 Tape Library Model L5B and System Storage TS3310 Tape Library Model E9U. Modular solution offers physical scalability from base library 5U control module to additional expansion unit of 9U height. Automated unit delivers native data transfer rate up to 80 MB/sec and 400 GB physical capacity per cartridge. It incorporates SCSI Ultra160 LVD and 2 Gbps native switched fabric FC attachment.

IBM System Storage TS3310 Tape Library Model L5B and E9U Introduces Modular, Scalable Tape Automation

At a glance
The TS3310 Tape Library combines IBM tape and automation reliability and scalability at open systems prices. Features include:

A space-efficient design with modular, stackable growth expansion options
More than twice the tape drive data transfer rate, up to 80 MB/sec native, compared to Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Ultrium 2
Twice the cartridge capacity, up to 400 GB native physical capacity per cartridge (800 GB with 2:1 compression) compared to LTO Ultrium 2 data cartridges
SCSI Ultra160 Low Voltage Differential (LVD) and 2 Gbps native switched fabric Fibre Channel attachment
Adherence to LTO specifications
Path failover for control and data paths as an optional feature
Rack-mount option
Capacity on demand expansion units
Dual power (additional power supply)

Overview
The IBM System Storage TS3310 Tape Library is the newest member of the IBM TotalStorage® family of tape solutions. It consists of the IBM System Storage TS3310 Tape Library Model L5B (machine type 3576 Model L5B) and the IBM System Storage TS3310 Tape Library Model E9U (machine type 3576 Model E9U).

The IBM System Storage TS3310 Tape Library is highly modular with physical scalability varying from the base library 5U control module to an additional expansion unit of 9U height. This automated tape library provides:

Space-efficient design with modular, stackable growth options, as well as capacity on demand growth options
LVD SCSI and 2 Gbps switched fabric Fibre Channel IBM Ultrium 3 Tape Drives and Ultrium 3, Ultrium 2, and Ultrium 1 media as well as Ultrium 3 WORM media
IBM's patented Multi-Path Architecture with logical libraries support for single or multiserver attachment of homogeneous or heterogeneous systems or applications
Path failover for both control paths and data paths
Capacity on demand growth options in its Expansion Modules
Local user interface (UI) support, consisting of a color touchscreen
Stand-alone free-standing library or optional rack mounting in an industry-standard 19-inch rack

The IBM System Storage TS3310 Tape Library Model L5B is a 5U base library unit which contains the library control module, fixed tape cartridge storage of 30 slots, a configurable I/O station of 6 slots, a touch screen display, cartridge handling robotics, and up to two LTO Ultrium 3 tape drives. A license key is also included, which enables one half of the total storage slots of a Model E9U Expansion Module for future expansion of the TS3310 Tape Library.

The IBM System Storage TS3310 Tape Module Model E9U is an optional 9U expansion module. Each E9U expansion module can accommodate up to four LTO Ultrium 3 Tape Drives and up to 80 tape cartridge slots, and a configurable I/O station of 0 to 12 slots (dependent on the I/O configuration of the L5B). In this initial release of this model, one of these TS3310 E9U Tape Library is stacked under the TS3310 Model L5B Tape Library forming an integrated 14U tape library (5U base library and one 9U expansion module). The license key included with the Model L5B activates one half of the total available storage of the E9U. Enablement of the remaining storage slots requires purchase of the capacity expansion feature (#1640).

Key prerequisites
Appropriate levels of host software are required to attach the TS3310 Tape Library to selected IBM i5 and iSeries(TM), AS/400®, IBM p5 and pSeries®, RS/6000®, IBM mainframe Linux(TM), IBM xSeries®, HP, Sun, UNIX®, and PC servers.
