Overview
The Digital Data Storage Generation 5 (DDS Generation 5) Tape Drive offers a cost-effective solution for xSeries® server customers. This single drive tape has 36 GB drive capacity, up to 72 GB in compression. The DDS Generation 5 Tape Drive complements the xSeries server line.

This tape drive is reliable as an internal installation or as a table top mount tape unit. It uses an xSeries enclosure that supports Ultra2 low-voltage differential SCSI (LVDS) connections of up to 80 MB/s. It provides convenience and ease-of-use features, while supporting high-speed tape backup.

Normally reserved for more expensive tape drives, IBM offers the following features as standard on the new DDS Generation 5 Tape Drive:

Up to 3.5/7.0 MB/s transfer rate
Up to 36/72 GB capacity
SCSI interface
Expanded buffer memory
Error rate optimization verification across all media types
Streaming operation
Backward read/write capability to DDS 4 and DDS 3 tape drive media
Three-year limited warranty

Key prerequisites
Ultra160 SCSI channel and an available 3.5-inch half-high (HH), or 5.25-inch HH bay for internal installations, or a 3510 or 0034BOX for external configurations.

Planned availability date
October 24, 2003

Description
This medium-density DDS tape unit is ideal for creating cost-effective automated tape backup solutions to satisfy moderate capacity data storage requirements.

The tape devices can be connected to various integrated Ultra2 or Ultra160 controllers, or an Ultra160 adapter, that support 80 MB/s data transfers over an LVDS bus.

The DDS Generation 5 Tape Drive provides convenience and ease-of-use features:

Improved cartridge media - 170M
Streaming operations
Backward compatibility with DDS/3 and DDS/4
SCSI interface
Three-year limited warranty

Data storage:
36 MB native
72 MB compressed

Backup rates up to:
Up to 3.5 MB/s native - 12.6 GB/hr
Up to 7.0 MB/s compressed - 25.2 GB/hr

DDS Generation 5 media option

This tape media option will be packaged as a separate option with five cartridges per carton and carries lifetime limited warranty.
