Tape Drive offers migration path from DDS tape technology.

Press Release Summary:

Stand-alone, streaming IBM 7206 Model VX2 writes data to tape using Discrete Packet Format and features tape capacity of up to 80 GB per cartridge and 160 GB with 2:1 compression. With data transfer rate of up to 6.0 MB/sec, product formats data in packets with variable speed scan and performs multiple data packet scans in one tape pass. Unit has audible noise level rated at 42 dBa both in operation and when idle.

Overview

The IBM 7206 Model VX2 is a stand-alone, SCSI, VXA-2 streaming tape drive that attaches externally to the IBM eserver iSeries(TM) family of workstations and servers.

Key Features

The 7206 Model VX2 Tape Drive writes data to tape using a Discrete Packet Format. The tape drive provides a media capacity of up to 80 GB (160 GB with 2:1 compression) data storage per cartridge. It has a sustained data transfer rate of up to 6.0 MB per second.

Benefits

Providing an excellent migration path from 4mm tape drives, the 7206 Model VX2 is designed to be a cost-effective solution for save, restore, and archiving functions. The 7602 Model VX2:

o Has increased storage capacity up to 80 GB (160 GB with compression) reducing the number of tape cartridges needed
o Provides a high data rate
o Formats data in packets, operates at variable speed, and can scan data packets multiple times in one scan

Key Prerequisites

An iSeries server.

Planned Availability Date

Description

The IBM 7206 Model VX2 is an externally attached tape drive for iSeries servers. The tape drive is a VXA-2 streaming tape drive that writes data to tape cartridges using a Discrete Packet Format. It features data compression that provides up to 160 GB capacity and a data transfer rate of up to 6.0 MB per second. Compared to the 7206 Model 220, the 7206 Model VX2 is enhanced with up to four times the capacity and has a higher data rate. The 7206 Model VX2 provides a more cost effective solution for save, restore, and archiving functions over previous models.

Note: Although the 7206 Model VX2 tape drive can give you high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. In addition, the compression technology used in the tape drive can double the amount of data that can be stored on the media; however, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data that is being compressed.
