NeoScale Releases Tape Encryption Suite Enabling High-Performance LTO-3 Security and Support for OpenVMS

Advancements Unveiled at 2006 HP Americas StorageWorks Conference

MILPITAS, Calif., June 21 -- NeoScale Systems Inc., the independent leader in enterprise storage security solutions, today announced OpenVMS compatibility and a new suite of high-performance tape encryption features that offer superior usability and serviceability for LTO-3 and other popular enterprise performance tape technologies. Available with the CryptoStor Tape(R) appliance, the new encryption suite will be presented at the 2006 HP Americas StorageWorks Conference in Las Vegas from June 21-23.

"IT professionals are becoming increasingly aware of the need to safe-guard data that is stored on removable tape media," said Robert Amatruda, research manager at IDC. "Solutions such as NeoScale CryptoStor products, which provide encryption support for industry-standard LTO-3 tape technology, are important tools to reduce the risk of data theft and unauthorized data access. Additionally, NeoScale, by supporting OpenVMS, will allow HP customers in clustered environments to better secure their data while benefiting from the increased capacity of LTO-3 tape drives."

Tape Encryption Suite Targets HP Environments

The new CryptoStor Tape(R) software suite supports high-performance LTO-3-based tape systems, including EML E-Series tape libraries and the HP Ultrium 960 (LTO-3) drives. Complete HP Enterprise Backup Solutions (EBS) using CryptoStor Tape with HP OpenView Storage Data Protector or Symantec NetBackup have been tested and documented in solution white papers available from HP (www.hp.com/go/ebs). Users of LTO-3 tape now benefit from reduced backup and recovery windows as a result of CryptoStor Tape's increased throughput capabilities. Also part of the new software suite is persistent binding of drives to applications, greatly simplifying usability by ensuring tape drives maintain a consistent presence to the backup server. Serviceability is improved as well, providing users additional diagnostic capabilities, such as the new CryptoStor Trace Tool.

NeoScale has also successfully verified interoperability of CryptoStor Tape with OpenVMS in HP's OpenVMS Lab. In testing, the CryptoStor Tape appliance was deployed between an OpenVMS server and a tape library. CryptoStor Tape compressed and encrypted the data before writing data to tape. Utilization of CryptoStor appliances in OpenVMS environments is completely transparent to users, as no server CPU cycles are required to encrypt or compress the data prior to transferring to tape.

NeoScale's CryptoStor Tape appliance provides robust, high-performance hardware-based encryption and compression; seamless integration with all leading backup management software and hardware solutions; flexible policy management; and global key management support to ensure automated tape recovery from any location without sacrificing information security.

Key CryptoStor Tape features include hardware-based AES encryption and LZS compression; digitally authenticated tape content to ensure data integrity; secure Web management with optional two-factor authentication; role-based security; clustering that enables automatic sharing of security policies and the key catalog among other CryptoStor Tape appliances; integration with CryptoStor KeyVault(TM) for automated centralized key management; redundant components for high availability and FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certification including key zeroing when tampering is detected.

"HP has a long history of successfully meeting our customers' data protection needs by delivering a broad portfolio of proven tape-based data protection solutions," said Bob Wilson, vice president, Nearline, StorageWorks Division, HP. "NeoScale delivers an advanced tape storage security appliance that satisfies HP's demanding EBS performance and manageability requirements."
