Overview

New models of the IBM TotalStorage(TM) Enterprise Tape Media 3599 are now available to provide you the opportunity to order data and cleaning cartridges for the new IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592. These models allow flexibility in the specification and ordering of cleaning cartridges and pre-labeled, initialized, and bulk-packaged data cartridges.

The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 consists of a new data cartridge and a new cleaning cartridge. The data cartridge contains an advanced metal particle tape specifically optimized for the Enterprise Tape environment, providing a native cartridge capacity of up to 300 GB (900 GB with 3:1 compression). This capacity is a significant improvement over the 10 GB to 60 GB native cartridge capacity available with the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590. Cartridge memory is built into every data cartridge to enhance the functionality and reliability of the media. The form factor of the 3592 cartridges is similar to the 3590 cartridges allowing them to be used in the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Automated Tape Library 3494 or StorageTek Automated Cartridge Systems (ACS) Silo solutions.

Models of the Enterprise Tape Media 3599 now available include:

o Model 011 - Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 (Data) is initialized, labeled and optionally scaled with volume serial information.

o Model 012 - Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 (Data) is with volume serial information only.

o Model 013 - Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 (Data) is without labeling or initialization.

o Model 017 - Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 (Cleaning) is for the cleaning cartridge for the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives.

Key prerequisites

This product is only for use with the Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A.

Planned availability dates

Description

The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Media 3599 provides the ability to order pre-labeled, initialized, or bulk-packaged tape data cartridges and cleaning cartridges.

The 3599 Models 011, 012, and 013 provide the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 having data cartridges with a 300 GB native capacity (900 GB with 3:1 compression). These cartridges can be used with the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A. The new 3599 models include:

o Model 011 - IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridges 3592 (Data) in a 20-pack which are initialized and pre-labeled with starting volume serial information

o Model 012 - IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridges 3592 (Data) in a 20-pack which are pre-labeled with starting volume serial information

o Model 013 - IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridges 3592 (Data) in a 20-pack

o Model 017 - IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 (Cleaning) in a 5-pack with or without media ID labels

Features of 3592 Data Cartridges include:

o An advanced metal particle tape specifically optimized for the Enterprise Tape environment.

o 300 GB native capacity in a single compact cartridge.

o Cartridge memory, built into every data cartridge, is designed to enhance functionality and media reliability by storing access history and media performance information for use by the tape drive every time the cartridge is accessed.

o Initialization and pre-labeling, with the ability to specify a starting volume serial and color-coding, may help save time and labor when adding new cartridges into your existing inventory.

o 60 GB scaled cartridge

The 60 GB Fast Access feature (#9060) ships cartridges pre-initialized to 60 GB. These pre-scaled cartridges can be ordered (and labeled) for a specific VOLSER range. This allows capacity scaling to be exploited by an application that permits media pools to be defined by VOLSER range. This feature should only be ordered for applications that specifically support these pre-scaled cartridges. For information on which Independent Software Vendors (ISV) support capacity scaling with this 60 GB pre-scaled cartridge, refer to the 3592 ISV site that can be accessed at:

http://storage.ibm.com/tape/conntrix/

For more information on capacity scaling with the 60 GB scaled cartridge, refer to the capacity scaling considerations section of the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape System 3592 Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0464).

Note: To help promote reliability, use IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridges and Tape Cleaning Cartridges which conform to IBM's specifications. Additional product information and deliverables can be found on the IBM TotalStorage Storage Media Web site at:
