TAOS, Inc. Will Feature Three Display Management and Color Control Demos at SID 2006 in Booth No.1539

Each TAOS Demo at SID 2006 Illustrates a Different Aspect of Ambient Light Sensing as It Relates to Display Panel Management and Color Control

June 5, 2006 (Plano, TX) - Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions®, Inc. (TAOS) announced today that it will be exhibiting at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2006 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition which is being held this week (June 4-9) at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA. At SID 2006, TAOS, Inc. will feature three demos in its booth, #1539. TAOS, Inc. - a recognized leader in mixed-signal, optoelectronic sensing - has designed each of these demos to illustrate a different aspect of ambient light sensing as it relates to display panel management and color control.

The first demo will be a closed-loop optical feedback system that will show how chromaticity control for RGB LED backlighting can be maintained with a high degree of accuracy even over time and temperature. RGB LEDs have the potential to outperform other existing light sources because they provide longevity, low-power consumption, large color gamut and rugged shock resistance. However, RGB LED backlighting systems will require closed-loop color control to manage LED variability over time and temperature. This demo will focus on the ability of the TAOS TCS230 Programmable Color Light-to-Frequency Converter to maintain a target x,y chromaticity error of approximately ±0.002.

The second demo will illustrate the benefits of automated display backlight control. The TAOS TSL2563 low voltage Light-to-Digital (LTD) device helps extend battery life (up to 25%) and provides optimum viewing in diverse lighting conditions by helping to automatically manage the display brightness. The TAOS LTD device is ideal for small displays found in mobile phones, PDAs, portable media players, cameras, hand-held games and camcorders. With an I²C digital output, the TSL2563 LTD requires no external circuitry for meeting critical signal conditioning performance requirements such as repeatability for today's displays. Like all the TAOS LTD devices, the TSL2563 helps ensure optimum display viewing in both low-light levels and very bright light ranging from 0.1 lux to 40,000 lux.

The third demo uses a novel approach in which system-to-system level repeatability for display panels can be precisely attained. Using a patent pending on-chip auto calibration feature, the responsivity or output signal of the light-to-voltage ambient light sensor can be finely adjusted to a particular value for a known light intensity. The responsivity of the output of the device can be adjusted to match the target value to within about 2%. The total time to perform auto calibration is less than one second in contrast to a manually intensive calibration which takes about 20 seconds with a tolerance of about 10%.

TAOS, Inc. is one of 250 companies that will be exhibiting during SID 2006. The hours of the 2006 exhibition are:
Tuesday, June 6 -- 10:30 AM - 6:30 PM
Wednesday, June 7 -- 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Thursday, June 8 -- 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM
