Tactile Sensor System conforms to complex-shaped objects.

Press Release Summary:

Model T-2000 tactile sensor system is based on PPS-proprietary TactArray technology, employing capacitive pressure sensors that continuously deliver accurate data after 1, initial calibration. One T-2000 can be configured with 16 to 256 sensor elements in array sizes up to almost 6 sq in. System specifications include full scale ranges of 3, 12, or 30 PSI, 0.15% static noise, and 1.0% non-linearity. T-2000 comes with Windows®-compatible software.

New Tactile Sensor Arrays Conform To Fit Human Needs

- Conformable sensor makes it possible to measure pressure and touch in places not previously possible - such as on the curved surfaces of the human body -

Los Angeles, CA (February 20, 2002) - Pressure Profile Systems, Inc. (PPS) today introduced the T-2000 tactile sensor system that uses a conformable array of pressure sensors to quantify the sense of touch. The T-2000 easily bends and forms to complexly shaped objects such as the human hand, tool handles, joystick controls, or feet. Furthermore, its capacitive-based design enables accurate, stable, and reliable operation.

A complete hardware/software system, the T-2000 can measure pressure in ways that have not previously been possible. The system is sensitive enough to acquire pressure data such as the human pulse felt at skin level and flexible enough to check the fit of a helmet, shoe, or prosthetic. The T-2000 is based on the PPS-proprietary TactArray technology originally developed for use in tactile gloves for surgical data acquisition. This technology uses capacitive pressure sensors rather than traditional resistive sensors. Unlike resistive sensors that require multiple calibrations during a single session, the T-2000 continuously delivers reliable data after only one initial calibration resulting in faster, more repeatable data collection and a more robust system.

A single T-2000 can be configured with 16 to 256 sensor elements in array sizes up to almost six square inches. Custom configurations are available upon request.

System specifications include full scale ranges of 3, 12, or 30 PSI, 0.15% static noise, and 1.0% non-linearity. In addition, pressure sensitivity is user-selectable. Complete specifications can be obtained by contacting PPS.

The T-2000 comes complete with everything needed for fast, out-of-the box data collection. The user simply plugs the system into an available USB port on a personal computer and installs the included Windows®-compatible software. This software supports several modes of operation allowing real-time data display and data capture. Data acquisition rates can range up to 10kHz, making the T-2000 one of the fastest tactile data acquisition systems available. Data output can be selected in ASCII format for easy exporting to Microsoft® Excel® and other desktop applications, or in binary format for use with MatLab.(TM) or other analysis packages.

Price and Availability

T-2000 prices start at $6,500 for a system with a 4x4 element array. This price includes the conformable array, USB interface electronics, and the data acquisition and visualization software. Delivery is four weeks and a comprehensive one-year warranty is included.
