T8 LED Driver incorporates power factor correction.

Press Release Summary:

Intended for fluorescent tube replacement, T8 LED Driver is based on 88EM80 series LED controller chips and fits directly inside traditional T8 tube lamp. Design leverages 88EM80 series' optimized DSP core and adaptive feedback circuitry to optimize power factor and minimize THD. Device also leverages current control loops and proprietary algorithms of 88EM80 series. Despite compact form factor, level of integration minimizes external component requirements.

Marvell Introduces World's Most Advanced Lighting Ballast Design With Power Factor Correction for LED T8 Lamps

Company's T8 LED Driver Platform Offers Industry's Highest PFC Ratio, Ease of Design and Ultra-Compact Form Factor

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Marvell (NASDAQ: MRVL), a worldwide leader in integrated silicon solutions, today introduced the Company's first LED T8 driver platform design for fluorescent tube replacement based on the new Marvell 88EM80 series of LED controller chips. Marvell's LED T8 reference design offers the industry's highest level of Power Factor Correction (PFC), ease of use and an ultra-compact form factor that fits directly inside the traditional T8 tube lamp.

The Marvell T8 LED driver design leverages the 88EM80 series' optimized DSP core and adaptive feedback circuitry to deliver highest power factor and the industry's lowest level of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) for easier worldwide regulatory compliance, including Energy Star. It also leverages the current control loops and proprietary algorithms which are already built into the 88EM80 series to drastically simplify overall design and system implementation. The ultra-compact size of the Marvell T8 LED ballast design requires significantly smaller magnetic components than other commercially available platforms. Furthermore, due to the high level of integration of the 88EM80 series, the Marvell T8 LED driver design requires fewer external components, thus resulting into much lower system cost.

"Marvell's revolutionary T8 LED driver reference design is an excellent example of how the Company can provide very high performance products in small form factors while delivering a very cost effective and affordable solution to accelerate mass market adoption of energy efficient T8 LED lamps," said Kishore Manghnani, Vice President of Green Technology Products at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. "As lighting manufacturers develop new energy efficient products that seamlessly integrate into existing commercial and retail setups, they can rely on the innovative and easy to use LED T8 driver reference design to quickly launch new products."

Availability

Marvell is currently sampling its T8 LED driver reference design based on the 88EM80 and other reference designs for a variety of lamps and light fixtures to major OEMs. The Company will showcase these reference designs at the Strategies in Light Conference in Santa Clara on, February 10-12.
