NEC Electronics America Launches Innovative Value-Integrated System-on-Glass LCD Module for Portable Devices

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 15 -- NEC Electronics America, Inc., a leading supplier of innovative liquid crystal display (LCD) solutions in the Americas, today introduced a new 3.5-inch (8.9 centimeters diagonal) low- temperature polysilicon (LTPS) thin-film-transistor (TFT) system-on-glass (SOG) LCD module, part number NL4864HL11-01B, with video graphic array (VGA) resolution. This module combines NEC LCD Technologies' super-reflective, natural light TFT (SR-NLT) and LTPS technologies to achieve high transmissivity and luminance together with high contrast and high pixel density, enabling users to view bright and clear displays in any kind of ambient light. This is the first product to be manufactured on the LTPS TFT mass production line at NEC LCD Technologies' facility in Akita, Japan.

With the addition of the LTPS line, NEC LCD Technologies has expanded its core offerings to include value-integrated TFT (VIT) technology. By applying its VIT technology, which integrates peripheral circuitry on the glass substrate of the LCD module using LTPS technology, the company achieves a significant reduction in the peripheral wiring of the glass substrate and in the number of connections with external circuits. This results in pixel density that is four times higher than that of conventional 3.5-inch quarter VGA (QVGA) modules, making the new module ideal for a wide variety of portable devices, including personal digital assistants (PDAs) and navigation devices. The VIT technology on the SOG module also significantly improves pixel aperture ratio and backlight efficiency while yielding an overall higher level of balance among attributes.

"We have seen a rapid increase in market demand for diverse functionality for portable devices that can display vivid color, even under direct sunlight," said Dr. Shigehiko Satoh, associate vice president and general manager, displays strategic business unit, NEC Electronics America. "Combining our VIT and SR-NLT technologies, we have created a slim module that meets the visibility requirements of these users."

The VIT SOG LCD module offers high luminance of 200 candelas per square meter (cd/m2) and has a high density of 200 pixels per inch with a reflective ratio of 10 percent. The module is also equipped with a touch panel, a timing controller and a DC/DC converter. The new 3.5-inch VIT SOG LCD module will be on display in NEC Electronics America's booth #1235 at Society for Information Display (SID) Symposium 2007 in Long Beach, California, May 22-24. Also on display will be four prototype SOG displays: a 3.5-inch SOG quarter high- definition (QHD) module, a 2.7-inch VGA module, and a 1-inch and 2.7-inch display modules that display high-resolution, three-dimensional images.
