Elma's Offers New System Monitors For Each Type of Application

FREMONT, California, Oct. 12, 2004 - Elma Electronic Inc., a global manufacturer of electronic packaging products, now offers system monitoring and management units specifically designed for Mil/Aero, Communications, and general Industrial applications.

The Sentry I System Monitor is ideal for a wide range of VME/64x, VXI, CompactPCI or other chassis. It can monitor up to eight voltages (four positive and four negative) and can be easily configured for non-standard voltages. The unit reports fan fail and over-temp status via LEDs after receiving inputs from locked rotor fans and and sensors. Optionally, it can also report fan fail status from tach output fans. The Sentry has the ability to directly drive up to twelve LEDs (bi-color or single color), and to "OR" the outputs of several voltage monitors to drive a single LED. The unit has four optional LED drivers for indicating the status of fans, temperature sensors, etc.

Designed for COTS/Mil programs, the Sentry III Diagnostic Monitor is a microprocessor-based instrument for monitoring and controlling the power supplies, fans, etc, in an Elma chassis. It monitors and displays current values for AC and DC voltages, inlet and outlet air temperatures. The unit can compare voltages and temperatures against preset limits and raise an alarm if these limits are exceeded. If safe operating, limits are exceeded, system power is shut down. In addition, the warning and fatal failure limits are user programmable to meet system requirements.

Monitoring up to four fans for rotation, the Sentry III provides closed-loop control of the cooling fans. A desired outlet air temperature may be set and the Sentry will run the fans just fast enough to maintain that temperature, providing adequate cooling with a minimum of acoustic noise. Through a keypad, the operator may interrogate and control various aspects of the Sentry's operation. For remote control, a RS-232 serial port duplicates much of the functionality of the Sentry's front panel. This allows a remote processor or operator to monitor and control Sentry functions. Finally, a "Battleshort" feature allows the operator to override all failure shutdown modes during mission critical applications.

For Telecom applications, the IPM Sentry shelf manager can individually adjust the speed of the fans depending on the temperature within the chassis. It is able to read the tachometer input for up to eight fans, using a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) output to control the fan speed. The unit maintains a System Event Log (SEL) along with a Sensor Data Record (SDR), which can be accessed by the IPM controller. The IPM Sentry collects information on the Field Replaceable Units (FRU), such as hot swap peripheral boards, as well as sending out remote alarms via RS232 or 10/100 Ethernet. The unit is compliant to the PICMG 2.9 specification for shelf management.

Incorporating a modular design, the IPM Sentry shelf manager is able to use the same bare PCB boards with slightly modified components in its PICMG 3.0 (ATCA) and PICMG 2.0/2.16 (cPCI) versions. This reduces production costs, savings that are passed onto the customer.
