Synaptics Supporting Ultrabook Growth with Latest TouchPad Solutions

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Synaptics Inc. (NASDAQ: SYNA), a leading developer of human interface solutions for mobile computing, communications and entertainment devices, today announced extensive TouchPad(TM) support for the emerging Ultrabook notebook PC category. An Ultrabook notebook combines the functionality and features of a tablet in a thin, lightweight, powerful design based on a reference specification from Intel. The industry-leading ClickPad(TM), including Image Sensing technology that detects multiple fingers, supports large TouchPad surface areas that are ideal for precise navigation and sophisticated gesture recognition. As the industry leader in human interface technology, augmented by its co-engineering partnership with Microsoft for Windows 8, Synaptics will continue to drive the evolution of the Ultrabook category as touch becomes a more prominent feature in more powerful, portable notebook PCs.

"We believe Ultrabooks will become the dominant form factor in portable computing over the next couple of years and multi-touch touchpads will play a key role in making Microsoft Windows 8, with its focus on touch and gestures, successful in next-generation portable computers," said Tim Bajarin, President of Creative Strategies.

The HP Folio13, Lenovo u300s, Acer Aspire S3 and Toshiba Portege Z830 feature custom TouchPad solutions developed with system-level engineering expertise gained from delivering more than one billion touch solutions to the market. The rapidly emerging Ultrabook category is defined as machines designed with ease of portability in mind, featuring 11.1 -13 target screen sizes, in lightweight machines with a long battery life, all in a thin design. Solid-State Disk (SSD) storage to enable fast boot and resume are also trademarks of the leading Ultrabooks that are expected to be priced under $1,000.

"Ultra-responsive, ultra-sleek Synaptics ClickPad IS solutions deliver multi-touch gesture performance and ClickSmart functionality that maximizes the usable gesture surface area, all in an amazing ultra-thin form factor. Additional Synaptics technologies such as InterTouch, which supports high-speed connectivity to the motherboard, provides heightened TouchPad performance," said Ted Theocheung, Vice President of Marketing for Synaptics' PC business. "Only Synaptics can provide the compelling innovation, performance and sleek design characteristics that PC OEMs know are necessary to drive the growing appeal of Ultrabook PCs."
