New Omron Fiber Optic Switching Devices Made of Glass and Plastic Reduce Cost and Increase Design Flexibility

SCHAUMBURG, IL (June 25, 2003)-Omron's new fiber optic switching incorporate an innovative combination of glass and plastic. The glass and plastic design creates optical devices that are low cost, provide increased design flexibility, enable a short focus length, and can be fabricated at a high speed. The new Omron 2x2 and 1 x 8 optical switches feature a small MEMS-scale package and at 100mW, consume less power than competitors. The new Omron variable optical attenuator (VOA) with indicator incorporates ultra-miniature actuator technology and high-efficiency design, while a 4-channel multiplexer/demultiplexer unifies optical elements into a single unit to create the world's smallest mux/demux device. An Omron 12 channel multimode interconnect is also available.

These new devices are ideal for access area applications where fiber optic cables deliver communication access to homes and businesses. The new devices are available from stock. The 2x2 switch is $100 in volume.
