Switchgear improves linemen safety.

Press Release Summary:

Kyle® VFI Vacuum Fault Interrupter pad-mounted switchgear with Visible-Break provides positive visual verification of contact status when distribution-switching procedures require indication of open circuit prior to testing and verification. Visible-Break feature is available in 2-position (open/closed) and 3-position (open/close/ground) configurations with ground switch capabilities. Unit meets switching and protection requirements for 5, 15, 25, and 35 kV underground systems.

Cooper Power Systems Introduces Kyle® VFI Pad-Mounted Switchgear with Innovative Visible-Break Accessory

Major design feature improves linemen safety, confidence and productivity

South Milwaukee, WI, October 4, 2002 - Cooper Power Systems' Kyle® VFI Vacuum Fault Interrupter pad-mounted switchgear with Visible-Break provides positive visual verification of contact status when distribution-switching procedures require indication of an open circuit prior to testing and verification. The Visible-Break feature is available in two-position (open/closed) and three-position (open/close/ground) configurations with ground switch capabilities.

Visible-Break enables an operator to inspect and verify contact positions through a sealed viewing window. Large, easily identifiable contacts show the open/close and open/close/ground positions. Visible-Break can be specified on the source and/or tap sides of the pad-mounted switchgear units.

Similar in design to other Kyle pad-mounted switchgear operators, the Visible-Break accessory can be operated with a hotstick or T-handle. The three-position switch facilitates grounding of incoming/outgoing cables, limiting exposure to live terminations. For added security, the operating handle advances in single-stroke, non-contiguous increments.

"Saving time, money and improving overall productivity are real-world benefits of the Visible-Break units," said Martha Bemal, Kyle pad-mount product manager. "Sioux Valley Energy is one example of a utility that has improved linemen safety and increased productivity since purchasing Visible-Break pad-mounted switchgear."

VFI pad-mounted switchgear offers a simple, economical solution to switching and protection requirements for 5, 15, 25 and 35 kV underground systems. The modular design of VFI switchgear enables the switching system to be tailored to specific requirements without the high cost of custom construction.

Features of the VFI units include a resettable breaker mechanism that speeds up service restoration without replacement of conventional fuses, Tri-Phase electronic control for easy time-curve coordination, distribution automation capabilities and vacuum interrupters with axial-magnetic field contacts.

Applications for VFI pad-mounted switchgear include utility and commercial/industrial. In addition, these units are easily adaptable to standardized distribution systems.
