Dow Coating Solutions Introduces ECOSURF(TM) SA Surfactants

New seed-oil based surfactants meet most environmental and handling safety standards in high-performance paints and coatings

Charlotte, NC - June 03, 2008
Dow Coating Solutions, a market facing business of The Dow Chemical Company, today introduced ECOSURF(TM) SA Surfactants, a new generation of patented, biodegradable, nonionic surfactants that meet most environmental and handling safety standards world-wide, while offering excellent performance and economics. Made using naturally occurring palm seed oil alcohols, these new surfactants are ideal candidates for a broad range of applications including coatings without sacrificing key product attributes.

"In order to achieve wide industry acceptance, surfactants like ECOSURF(TM) SA have to offer higher performance and better economics than the products available to the market today" Caio Sedeno, Global Product Director for Dow Surfactants said. "Additionally, since they are based on seed oil alcohols and create no VOC emissions, ECOSURF(TM) SA Surfactants also give paint systems an improved overall environmental profile."

These new surfactants exhibit several, improved performance attributes important to paint, coating and ink systems, including low odor, no aqueous gelling, rapid dissolution (even in cold water), fast foam collapse and favorable formulating and handling properties. They have excellent wetting properties, with low equilibrium surface tension and rapid dynamic surface tension reduction. They are especially suited to pigment wetting and stabilization.

In addition to improving environmental profiles and product performance, ECOSURF(TM) SA Surfactants can help paint and coatings developers reduce costs through faster dissolution and reduced cycle times.

"Dow Coating Solutions is approaching environmental responsibility as a tremendous market and innovation growth opportunity," Wendy Hoenig, global R&D director for Dow Coating Solutions, explained. "In 2008, the business is introducing multiple technologies and R&D programs that will help our customers lead efforts that change the way the world looks at the coatings industry."

The company is showcasing the first two products in the line, ECOSURF(TM) SA-7 Surfactant and ECOSURF(TM) SA-9 Surfactant, at the American Coating Show, June 3-5, in Charlotte, N.C. (booth # 1153).

In addition to coatings, ECOSURF(TM) SA Surfactants are ideal for household, industrial and institutional cleaning formulations, where they offer unique performance attributes like superior detergency and biodegradability.

Background

Specialty surfactants offer a broad range of performance attributes and are niche oriented. They are typically used when customers require excellent performance and specific characteristics for their formulations. A customer will often work with a surfactants producer to develop a specific chemistry for end-use applications.
