Surface Mount Inductors for Power Applications

New "SMT4015" and "SMT1803" Inductors Respond to Market Needs:
Higher Current Handling; Smaller Size for Wireless Devices

15 August 2002, Gowanda, NY (USA) - Gowanda Electronics announces the introduction of two new surface mount toroid inductor series - SMT4015 and SMT1803. The SMT4015 is a shielded toroidal choke designed for higher current handling capability in conjunction with improved electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance. It offers the same rugged termination benefits and molded base design as the company's "power b" series. The SMT1803 is a high efficiency, low profile surface mount toroid which offers a very high current to power size ratio. The SMT1803 series represents the smallest of all surface mount toroids currently available.

Both the SMT4015 and the SMT1803 inductor series can be used for a variety of power applications. The SMT4015 is specifically targeted for use in power applications where higher currents are required, such as filters for DC/DC converters and switching regulated power supplies. The tiny SMT1803 is targeted for use in size-sensitive applications where less power is required but small size is mandatory. Applications include many of the hand held devices popular in the wireless area, including cell phones, small drives and PC cards.

The SMT4015 series draws upon the company's existing SMT3106 series, but is a step up in size, power handling capability, and efficiency. When compared to the SMT3106 series, the new SMT4015 series is not quite 2x in size, but delivers nearly 3x in current ratings.

The SMT4015 series, like other products in the company's "power b" series, utilizes a very robust base that is made of a high grade epoxy molding material that is suitable for all reflow solder temperatures. This high quality base will not deform or shrink at soldering temperatures. The solder coil connection is high temperature solder while the termination surface that is soldered to the circuit board is a lower temperature 60/40 solder. This solder combination provides enhanced reflow to the circuit board without melting the solder on the coil connection. Gowanda uses a high temperature solder connection rather than a TC (thermal compression) bond connection to assure reliability.

Both inductor series are well suited for use in microprocessor and distributed power applications - including power supplies, power regulators, and DC to DC converters - especially in test & measurement equipment, medical diagnostic equipment, and industrial process control equipment. Other applications include use in security systems, instrumentation, bar code and lab analysis equipment.

Technical specifications for products in the SMT4015 series include: inductance from 1.0 to 250 microHenries (@ 1 kHz), current ratings from 11.6 to 1.05 Amps, and saturation currents from 17.4 to .70 Amps. Specifications for products in the SMT1803 series include: inductance from .47 to 100 microHenries (@ 1 kHz), current ratings from 2.16 to .28 Amps, and saturation currents from 5.80 to .45 Amps.

Gowanda Electronics also offers custom designs to meet the specific requirements of an application. For design details or custom requirements contact Gowanda Electronics at (716) 532-2234 or check the company website at www.gowanda.com for design details. Typical unit pricing (US Funds) is $.88 for the SMT1803 series and less than $4.00 for the SMT4015 series.

These new SMT4015 and SMT1803 inductor series complement Gowanda's extensive range of leading edge inductor designs for RF and power applications, including its most recently introduced "SMP1812" High Current Rating Power Inductor, "SMRF1812" Robust Design Surface Mount RF Inductor, "SMT35A" Inductor With Versatility and Efficiency, "SMRF2007" Vertical Mount Inductor for RF Applications, "SMP2007" Miniaturized Inductor for Power Applications, "CC" Solderable Inductor, "CMF2" Surface Mount Common Mode Filter, and "Power Pod' Surface Mount Inductor.
