Original Press Release:

New Littelfuse 458 Series Nano2® Surface Mount Fuse

New fuse series provides higher inrush current withstand (I2t) capability than competing fuses, while maintaining a small footprint for crowded PC boards

DES PLAINES, IL - October 15, 2008 - Littelfuse, Inc. (NASDAQ/NGS:LFUS), today introduced the 458 Series of 1206-size surface mount fuses. The newest member of the Littelfuse Nano2® fuse product family, the 458 Series is a fast-acting fuse line for overcurrent protection at the PCB level. The 458 Series uses "Wire in Air" construction, a technology that makes possible a smaller fuse without sacrificing I2t, temperature range and operating voltage range.

The fuse's high surge-withstand capability means fewer open fuses during momentary overloads, and reduced OEM warranty costs for board replacements. Its small size and favorable temperature specs make the 458 Series an ideal solution for today's smaller electronics designs, especially in the growing markets for notebook PCs and battery packs, where the 1206 fuse is smaller than the nano-size fuses commonly used.

Other suggested applications are in the DC input side of electronic systems such as LCD backlight inverters, DC/DC power modules, car navigation systems, network equipment, telecom equipment, electronic signage and portable consumer electronics.

Smaller Size without Sacrificing Performance

When designers are looking for smaller overcurrent protection devices for these applications, their choices are to use a smaller size chip fuse or a thin film fuse. Because the 458 Series fuse is of a "Wire in Air" design, with ceramic body and gold plated brass caps, it provides better surge withstand characteristics than regular 1206-size chip fuses, and it has less temperature derating than comparable thin film fuses.

The 458 Series fuses are available in ratings from 1 to 10A, with overload opening characteristic of 5 seconds max at 250 percent of ampere rating and high inrush current withstand capability. They have an Interrupting Rating of 50A at 63VDC. The 458 Series fuses are lead-free and fully RoHS compliant, environmentally friendly products, and are recognized under the components program of UL.

As a market leader in fuse technology, Littelfuse offers OEMs production capacity for high volume demand, and fast production ramp-up for short lead times. Coupling high quality and a global delivery network, Littelfuse provides leading circuit protection technologies and industry leading application support.

Availability

The 458 Series fuses are available on tape and reel in quantities of 1500, starting September 1, 2008. Pricing and samples are available by contacting a Littelfuse sales representative.
