ITT Industries, Cannon Introduces Surface Mount Universal Contact

NEWTON, MA (May 12, 2003)-ITT Industries, Cannon announces availability of the new Universal Contact for a broad range of telecommunications and industrial applications. The contact is manufactured as a single-piece stamped product, incorporating pre-load and anti-lift features. It has been designed to overcome interconnect constraints as seen with traditional solutions where the contact is integral to the connecting device. The contact provides the opportunity to standardize interfacing across multiple devices. In mobile phone products it provides a standard interface for speakers, microphones, buzzers and antennas, as well as other devices on the printed circuit boards.

The device is surface mountable with a minimum pitch of 1.35mm. The miniature footprint allows for placement under small devices, such as microphones, allowing design freedom to position the contact at any angle. The X-Y-Z movement provides a robust connection between the contact and the component assembly during shock and vibration.

Plated with beryllium copper, the maximum current rating for the Universal Contact is 2 amps nominal and 3.0 amps peak at 3.0VDC. The operating temperature is -40°C - 85°C at a relative humidity of 90%. The device is rated in accordance with IEC 68-2-36 for vibration and IEC 68-2-27, 30g for shock.

The pre-load force for the Universal Contact is 0.24N minimum after three reflow cycles at 220°C. The force at maximum deflection is 0.60N at 1.0mm after three reflow cycles. The spring rate of the beam is 0.15N/mm and the maximum beam deflection is 1.0mm. (The device will not overstress at maximum beam deflection.) The minimum recommended working deflection is 0.5mm.
