Ingres and rPath Develop an Industry Breakthrough 'Proof of Concept' for Enterprise Database Customers

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 15 // -- Ingres Corporation, the leading business open source database company, today unveiled Project Icebreaker, an integrated software maintenance unit that dramatically lowers the cost and complexity of database and operating system maintenance and support. The integration of the Ingres 2006 database with the Linux operating system enables a single, easy-to-manage environment where the operating system becomes transparent and support is provided by one point of contact and a unified maintenance stream. Ingres and rPath, provider of the first platform for creating and maintaining Linux software appliances, developed Project Icebreaker based on insight into customer needs.

"Project Icebreaker represents open source innovation at its best," said Dave Dargo, Ingres chief technology officer and senior vice president of strategy. "We want to help customers cut through the clutter of the software market by continuing to innovate and deliver software that's more responsive to their needs, and is inexpensive, reliable and open. Because of the collaborative and innovative nature of open source, Ingres and rPath were able to develop Project Icebreaker in only five months."

In traditional software environments, customers grapple with a lack of integration, multiple maintenance streams and painful installs for the various components of the software stack. Project Icebreaker eliminates the on-going maintenance chore because it combines, supports and delivers all software maintenance as a single stream, a capability unique to Ingres, and one closed-source vendors have struggled and failed to provide for customers. Other benefits include ease of installation and lower costs of ownership due to no license fees and better deployment of time and resources.

Additionally, Project Icebreaker includes support for virtualization technologies to make it easy for customers to create consistent and new virtual environments for simplifying hardware decisions. Also included is extensible management and support framework that makes room for new software components to be included in the single maintenance stream support. Licensed under the GPL 2, Project Icebreaker runs on any x86-compatible, 32-bit capable, server hardware appropriate for Linux.

"rPath and Ingres share the goal of simplifying the lives of IT providers," said Erik Troan, founder and chief technology officer for rPath. "Based on rPath and Ingres technology, Project Icebreaker offers companies an easy and efficient database software appliance that saves IT organizations time and resources. rPath is excited to be working with Ingres and plans to extend development so others can build appliances that run on top of the Project Icebreaker framework."
