Original Press Release:

Sunlight-Readable Displays from TFS Are a Perfect Fit for Outdoor or High Ambient Light Applications

Marlboro, MA - September 2004 - Sunlight-readable displays from Three-Five Systems, Inc. (NYSE: TFS) are ideal for situations in which the liquid crystal display (LCD) must be viewed outdoors or under high ambient light conditions. These transflective devices use the power of light to increase the readability of the display. The sunlight is captured by the display and reflected back through the screen to improve contrast even under the harshest of conditions. Ideal applications include ATM machines, outdoor kiosks such as mass transit and public information kiosks, security/surveillance displays, factory automation, process control, and military applications.

TFS offers transflective displays in three standard sizes - 10.4-inch, 12.1-inch and 15.0-inch - to demonstrate capability. TFS can also build transflective displays in sizes from 1-inch to 15-inches for a variety of applications.

Because transflective displays from TFS use the energy of ambient light rather than additional backlights, they use significantly less power and generate less internal heat than high-bright solutions. The cooler operating temperature means that fans are not needed, so the displays can be assembled in sealed enclosures to protect against dust and dirt. Reliability and product lifetimes are improved by the lower power requirement and sturdier packaging options. The lack of additional backlights also attributes to the much thinner profile of sunlight-readable displays compared to conventional brightness-enhanced displays.

"Transflective displays are a great alternative to high-bright displays," said Sriram Peruvemba, General Manager, Large Monitors and Displays Division of TFS. "In enclosures where there is restricted airflow, transflective displays will avoid thermal related issues which could otherwise cause the LCD to lose contrast.

Options and customization available for TFS' sunlight-readable displays include touchscreens, protective shields, custom enclosures & mounting hardware, AR coatings, regulatory testing & certification, and private labeling/logos. Single-unit quantity pricing is $750 for the TFS-10OF-LG-TF (10.4" model), $850 for the TFS-12OF-LG-TF (12.1" model), and $970 for
the TFS-15OF-LG-TF (15" model). Contact TFS for more details.
