Sun Microsystems Announces Support for SAP Solutions on the Solaris 10 OS on x64

Support for mySAP(TM) Business Suite and SAP NetWeaver® for the Low Cost Solaris 10 OS on x64 Platform Enables Customer Choice and Demonstrates Growing Demand for Alternative Platforms

ORLANDO, Fla., SAPPHIRE '06, May 17 / Furthering the strategic partnership with SAP AG, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW), today announced that support for mySAP(TM) Business Suite applications and the SAP NetWeaver® platform will be extended for the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS) to run on the x64 platform. The complete SAP business solutions applications stack will run on the Solaris 10 OS on the x64 platform, including the mySAP Customer Relationship Management application, the mySAP Supply Chain Management application, SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence component and others which underscores the growing demand for the most advanced operating system on the planet on the 64-bit platform.

With today's announcement, SAP customers will now have access to sophisticated features available only in the Solaris 10 OS when running on x64 hardware like the Sun Fire(TM) x64 servers. With SAP NetWeaver running on the Solaris 10 OS, SAP customers now have access to the popular features that are unique to this operating system, such as Dynamic Tracing (DTrace), Predictive Self-Healing and Solaris Containers. These sophisticated features of the Solaris 10 OS provide customers with increased network security, optimal performance and less overall server downtime. Customers will also have access to Sun's Java(TM) Enterprise System, a revolutionary, subscription-based approach to infrastructure software that reduces cost and complexity throughout the data center.

"Sun and SAP have been working together for 13 years to bring our joint customers some of the industry's best technology solutions. Today's announcement is yet another win for customers seeking choice, flexibility, scalability and low-cost alternatives," said James Fanella, Vice President of Global ISV Sales, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Bringing SAP NetWeaver together with the power of the Solaris 10 OS on x64 is further evidence of our commitment to work together to deliver low-cost and high performance-tuned platforms for the x64 marketplace."

The "Galaxy" Sun Fire X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 servers, powered by AMD Opteron(TM) processors with Direct Connect Architecture, offer up to twice the performance, consume about one-third the power and are one-quarter the size of similar servers from competitive vendors, delivering a combination of performance, features and value to customers that is not available from any other server supplier.

Since introducing the Solaris 10 OS in January 2005, Sun has distributed more than 4.6 million registered licenses -- at no cost to download. The Solaris 10 OS is currently supported on more than 650 platforms, providing customers with the ability to take advantage of the Solaris 10 OS on the broadest choice of hardware in the industry. The Solaris 10 OS is part of the Solaris Enterprise System which also contains the Java Enterprise System, Sun N1(TM) Management software and Sun Studio Developer tools available at no cost for both development and deployment. All of this software makes the Solaris Enterprise System the only comprehensive and open infrastructure software platform available today.

Sun also recently announced the Sun N1(TM) Advanced Architecture for SAP Solutions to provide end-to-end provisioning and management of SAP applications across virtualized heterogeneous environments, including the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS). Sun and SAP have collaborated to create this product that can streamline customers' IT processes and help reduce overall management complexity and operating costs, while improving resource utilization and enhancing application availability.
