SUMIT-ISM Module Supports MiniPCIe Cards for a Variety of Wireless Technologies

Adds wireless LAN, WPAN, or WWAN communications to SUMIT-based systems

ESC Silicon Valley, San Jose, CA - WinSystems announces the PXM-MiniPCIe, a SUMIT-ISM module that supports PCI Express MiniCards and two expansion USB connectors. It provides support for 802.11 a/g wireless, WLAN, and other high-performance communication functions that have been developed for fixed and mobile computing environments. The two USB 2.0 ports are for support of tethered applications such as storage, imaging, and video. The PXM-MiniPCIe is RoHS-compliant and operates from -40° to +85°C.

The PCI Express MiniCard socket on the PXM-MiniPCIe supports two primary system bus interfaces: PCI Express x1 and USB 2.0. But the PCIe MiniCard connector also provides connections to the SMBus, LEDs for wireless network visual status, SIM card for GSM and WCDMA application data storage, and a +1.5 and +3.3 volt power source for the MiniCard.

The PXM-MiniPCIe module has two right angle RF connectors onboard to make system integration easier for antenna placement in embedded, wireless applications. The module also supports both standard and half-size PCIe MiniCards.

A PCIe MiniCard is a very small form factor board used to implement PCI Express on removable cards for additional I/O functions. They are multi-sourced by a number of vendors worldwide. These cards are serviceable since they can be easily added and removed. MiniCards are flexible since different applications can be supported in the same socket. For example, cards are currently available for wireless LAN, WPAN and WWAN, cellular data, Bluetooth and other functions. This allows a system to be easily upgraded when new technologies become available.

There are also two USB 2.0 ports on the PXM-MiniPCIe module that are wired from the SUMIT A to shielded Type A connectors. Each port has overcurrent and inrush protection.

What is SUMIT-ISM?

SUMIT-ISM is a board format defined by the SFF-SIG that measures 90mm x 96mm. It specifies the board size, four fixed mounting holes, and flexible "expansion zones" for additional circuitry or I/O and/or bus connectors. Adding the SUMIT connectors on the ISM form factor creates SUMIT-ISM. It specifies where the SUMIT AB connectors are located. It also supports a legacy option for either PC/104 or PCI-104 modules since it allows the use of these bus connectors in the existing locations along with established dimensions and mounting holes.
