Stratus' New V Series Family Boosts Power, Performance and Productive Life for Mission-Critical Legacy Applications

Global account base votes 'VOS Forever'

MAYNARD, Mass., Dec. 11 /-- Stratus Technologies, Inc. announced today that, with the introduction of a new family of ftServer(R) V Series systems, the company continues to extend the investment protection and productive life of legacy applications in use by its customers. The V Series 250, 300 and 500 servers are designed with Stratus' current generation fault- tolerant system architecture, surpassing the processing performance of previous Intel processor-based V Series systems by as much 60 percent, and disk I/O performance by as much as 100 percent, depending on the model and workload. As with all Stratus servers, the new V Series line delivers better than 99.999 percent uptime availability.

Customers who have purchased V Series servers since the line was first announced in August 2004 have, on average, been doing business with Stratus for 13 years and taken delivery of three V Series systems. Seventeen have been customers for more than 15 years, with one value-added reseller logging 23 out of Stratus' 26 years in business. A new customer chose V Series to replace a NonStop Himalaya platform in its commercial credit bureau business. V Series systems are in production today in more than 15 countries supporting established applications in securities and commodities trading, electronic payments processing, banking systems, telecommunications, and manufacturing, among others.

The Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX) was among the first customers to utilize the V Series line in 2004 for supporting its new options electronic trading system (PHLX XL). A Stratus customer for over 15 years, the Exchange also served as a beta test site for this new V Series line. Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer Bill Morgan said, "The options industry was in the process of a major shift to electronic trading, and we had to redesign both our business model and the technology supporting it in order to effectively compete in this new environment. We relied on Stratus and its new V Series line to supply us with a system architecture that offered stability through its fault-tolerant design, speed and capacity, as well as flexibility to support our ongoing development efforts to add new competitive applications in the future." Founded in 1790, the Philadelphia Stock Exchange trades over 7,000 stocks, 2,327 equity options, 16 sectors index options and currency options and futures.

The new ftServer V Series line further improves customers' ability to extract additional value, improved performance, and longer life from high- volume, mission-critical VOS (virtual operating system) applications now running on Stratus PA RISC-based Continuum(R) or previous V Series models. The line is built upon the same basic hardware platform as Stratus' third- generation ftServer lines for Windows and Linux operating systems, and ftServer T Series servers for the telecommunications market. It uses Intel processor technology, including 2.8 GHz Xeon dual-core processors in high-end 2-way models. The new V Series line will also support new Stratus storage options with redundant logic, cooling and hot-swappable power supplies consistent with fault-tolerant data processing.

"The exceptional response to the V Series line from our installed base is really a testament to the value our customers place in their VOS applications, which typically drive huge amounts of business revenue," said Greg Enriquez, Stratus senior vice president, Worldwide Sales & Field Operations. "However, regardless of the value, they also need room to grow, more power, more storage, and ever-increasing processing capacity to keep these applications viable. That's what our customers expect to receive when they buy Stratus, and that's what we're committed to delivering for as long as they need it."

Prior to launching the first V Series, Stratus had provided VOS users with a wide array of open-source tools, features and technologies to enhance application functionality and extend the ability to integrate with other computing environments and platforms. Known as the OpenVOS initiative, the program made available to VOS system users, developers and administrators such technologies as GNU C++, Apache Web Server, STCP, SAMBA, RADIUS, POSIX, and IPSec, among many others in an effort to protect its customers' investments in VOS applications.
