Stratus ftServer System Delivers Simplicity and Reliability that VoIP Service Provider Needs for CATV Clients

Unable to kill the server, they bought three

MAYNARD, Mass., Dec. 11 -- VoIP services provider vCentrix will now benefit from the simplicity and uptime reliability of Stratus® ftServer® systems and ftScalable(TM) storage to support core-services delivery and advanced features to its cable and broadband provider clients, Stratus Technologies announced today.

vCentrix of Bedford, Mass., provides turnkey VoIP services that are branded and integrated by cable, fiber to the x (FTTX), and fixed wireless operators who want to offer their subscribers "triple-play services" -- voice and data communication in addition to television programming. vCentrix had evaluated a number of high-availability cluster solutions from a variety of vendors before choosing and installing three ftServer 5700 dual-core servers running Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® and one ftScalable storage system with dual fibre channel. The fault-tolerant servers have field-proven reliability with uptime in excess of 99.999 percent. They also support MySQL database with attached ftScalable storage, the voicemail storage director and the Stratus ENTICE(TM) session controller.

According to vCentrix, the system reliability and operational simplicity have added significant value to IT operations and productivity. "Now I can focus on developing new applications and adding features to our services portfolio instead of babysitting our cluster systems and databases," said Dave Gavin, vCentrix senior systems administrator. "These are the first systems I can say are plug-and-play and actually mean it. If I have a service question, real people answer the phone at Stratus; they know what they're talking about and don't try to pass you off to someone else. For us, ftServer systems were a great choice."

Prior to purchasing, Gavin tested the Stratus servers and storage systems with his MySQL database application. He began with exceptionally high transaction loads and then introduced database index corruption events known to cause problems with other systems. With the application running, Gavin pulled an Ethernet cable and a fibre cable from the ftScalable SAN attached storage and powered down one half of the fully redundant system, all without interrupting processing. "I tried, but I couldn't kill the server. The performance was very impressive."
