Strategic Collaboration Between IAR Systems and Freescale Expands Ecosystem Support for 32-bit ColdFire® V1 and V2 Cores

Strategic collaboration between IAR Systems and Freescale expands ecosystem support for 32-bit ColdFire® V1 and V2 cores

ORLANDO, Fla. (Freescale Technology Forum) - June 27, 2007 - IAR Systems, a leading supplier of embedded development tools, announces a comprehensive suite of tools for Freescale's ColdFire® microcontroller (MCU) architecture. The tool suite - IAR YellowSuite(TM) - is available to embedded developers using ColdFire MCUs based on the V1 and V2 cores. IAR Systems also plans to offer the tool suite for Freescale's S08 8-bit MCU architecture in Q1 2008.

"IAR YellowSuite for ColdFire provides a powerful suite of development tools for designers building embedded systems based on our ColdFire V1 and V2 cores," said Jeff Bock, global product marketing manager for Freescale's Consumer and Industrial Microcontroller Operation. "Our collaboration with IAR Systems also means that developers using the advanced Flexis(TM) MCF51QE128, the first MCU based on the ColdFire V1 core, will have broad ecosystem support."

"The strategic collaboration with Freescale and the addition of the ColdFire development suite to our product portfolio are milestones for IAR Systems," said Mats Ullstrom, Product Director, IAR Systems. "We strongly believe that the Flexis QE128 series with IAR YellowSuite will provide a very attractive solution for embedded developers."

At the heart of IAR YellowSuite is IAR Embedded Workbench®, the company's flagship C/C++ compiler. Integral to IAR Embedded Workbench is the C-SPY® debugging tool for testing of code using either a simulator or a hardware debug probe, such as IAR J-Link.

Using the combination of visualSTATE® and IAR PowerPac(TM) with IAR Embedded Workbench enables developers to increase the feature richness and code quality of an application while reducing implementation complexity and improving maintainability.

visualSTATE is an ideal graphical development tool to use for demanding event-driven embedded applications. visualSTATE generates optimized ANSI C code from state machine designs based on UML. It provides advanced verification and validation utilities and generates very compact C/C++ code that is 100% consistent with your system design.

IAR PowerPac is an integrated middleware family that combines a small memory footprint RTOS and a versatile file system.

The evaluation edition of IAR YellowSuite is available with Freescale's evaluation boards for the ColdFire V1 and V2 cores and IAR KickStart Kits for the V2 core. IAR YellowSuite will be available for ColdFire architecture in September 2007.

About ColdFire architecture
Building on the 68K foundation, ColdFire architecture comprises high-performance RISC cores with industry-leading code density and a rich set of connectivity peripherals. By supporting variable-length instructions, ColdFire architecture enables higher code density than traditional 32- and 64-bit RISC machines. More efficient use of on-chip memory reduces bus bandwidth and external memory requirements, resulting in lower system cost. ColdFire MCUs continue to set the pace for the embedded market - from industrial automation systems to inkjet printers and MP3 players. To date, Freescale has shipped more than a half billion 68K ColdFire core-based products.

About the Controller Continuum
From the ultra-low-end RS08 to the highest-performance ColdFire V4 MCU devices, the Controller Continuum provides stepwise compatibility for an easy migration path up or down the performance spectrum. Stepwise compatibility means developers can move from one device on the Continuum to the next compatible device, from the low end to the high end. Developers can choose to enter the Controller Continuum at the ultra-low-end RS08 MCU family, the more sophisticated S08 devices, ColdFire V1 MCUs or top-of-the-line ColdFire embedded controllers. Each step has family members that share packaging, peripherals or pin-outs with the next step up or down the Controller Continuum. The 8-bit to 32-bit compatibility connection point at the center of the Controller Continuum is Freescale's Flexis series of MCUs.
