Hobart Brothers Adds Stick Electrodes to Qualified Product Listing (QPL)

Troy, OHIO. March 14, 2005. Hobart Brothers recently added additional products to its line of Qualified Product Listing (QPL) Stick electrodes. The Hobart 718MC mild steel low hydrogen and Hobart Hoballoy 8018C3 low alloy low hydrogen Stick electrodes, by gaining QPL approval, meet the strict welding specifications required for military shipyard applications and are also ideal for applications in a number of commercial industries. The introduction of these electrodes as QPL approved products also attests to Hobart Brothers' ongoing commitment to working with the military to assess and meet their highly specified welding needs.

To obtain the QPL approval set forth for military Stick electrode use, the 718MC and 8018C3 Stick electrodes needed to pass specific testing guidelines for both chemical and mechanical properties. Specifically, approval required the electrodes meet governmental standards based on tensile and yield strengths, impact and welding capabilities, among others. In addition, the electrodes also had to pass governmental standards for concentricity (a measurement focused on the centering of the coating on the electrode), hydrogen levels and moisture levels.

According to Steve Knostman, quality engineer, Hobart Brothers, "The testing required for any Stick electrode to gain QPL approval is rigorous. The testing mimics a worse case scenario for shipyard welding applications-if the electrode can pass QPL testing, it's going to work well on most any application."

Mike Crawford, product manager, Stick electrodes, Hobart Brothers agrees, stating, "Normally an operator wouldn't weld, for example, vertical up with as large of a diameter electrode as 5/32 inches, but the fact that the 718MC and Hoballoy 8018C3 can do this and pass governmental X-ray inspection for its welds really attests to the high quality of performance of these products. Plus the possibilities for using these electrodes expand far beyond the military shipyard-they are ideal for any application where low hydrogen properties are desired."

Hobart 718MC
Designed to provide X-ray quality welds while reducing moisture pick-up and concern of hydrogen cracking, the Hobart 718MC mild steel low hydrogen electrode offers improved performance when welding in low-temperature environments where low-temperature impacts are required. The 718MC provides quality welds for out-of-position applications and offers higher deposition rates, reduced spatter and easier slag removal as compared to other electrodes in the same class-all factors contributing to reduced rework and cleanup time. The electrode's reliable arc starts and re-starts further enhance weld bead contour, while the stable arc reduces porosity and enhances operator control for critical applications. Designed for single and multiple pass welding applications, the 718MC operates using DCEP, AC power sources and is available in six diameters ranging from 3/32 to 1/4 inch.

Hoballoy 8018C3
Ideal for welding applications on 80,000 tensile strength steels and 1 percent nickel base materials, the Hoballoy 8018C3 low alloy low hydrogen Stick electrode offers excellent weld puddle control with superior wetting action and tie in. The Hoballoy 8018C3 has an electrode coating specially formulated to withstand conditions of high heat and humidity. This electrode also helps resist moisture re-absorption, prevent hydrogen cracking and eliminate starting porosity. With a stable, easy-to-control arc and low fume levels, the Hoballoy 8018C3 has high operator appeal and helps reduce the amount of labor needed for cleanup by offering a low spatter level and easy-to-remove slag. The Hoballoy 8018C3 is available in diameters ranging from 3/32 to 3/16 inch, and is ideal for all-position, single or multiple pass welding applications using a DCEP, AC power source.
