Molnlycke Adds Sterile Exam Glove to Biogel® Glove Line

New Glove - BioExam(TM) - is a powder-free, nitrile non-latex glove

NORCROSS, Ga., March 12 /-- Molnlycke Health Care US, LLC, maker of Biogel(R) surgical gloves and the only major medical glove company with an exclusively powder-free glove line, introduces BioExam(TM), a powder- free, non-latex, sterile examination glove.

"The new sterile exam glove features a longer cuff, providing better coverage and protection, making it an ideal choice for Labor and Delivery, or for over-gloving during patient draping prior to a surgical procedure to maintain a sterility," explains Carolyn Twomey, RN, vice president of clinical, technical, research.

"BioExam(TM), a nitrile ambidextrous glove, combines fit with excellent puncture resistance, making it ideal for use throughout a healthcare facility as a cost-effective alternative to sterile surgical gloves for non-invasive procedures," Twomey adds.

Nitrile is recommended as a preferred alternative to latex and for conditions where high-strength and/or chemical protection is required, such as pharmacy-related work.(1) Additional potential uses for BioExam(TM) are by anesthesia, in the ICU, ER, Burn Unit or on other floors where sterile barrier protection is needed for a procedure.

The new BioExam(TM) glove features a polymer inner coating for ease of donning, removing the need for a powder lubricant. This not only eliminates the risk of powder-related complications, but also reduces the risk of allergic reactions to aerosolized natural rubber latex proteins. The glove is packaged like surgical gloves -- in a peel pouch for easy donning to maintain sterility. It is available in singles or pairs.

The light blue, micro-textured glove features an AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) for freedom from holes of 1.5 percent, well below the recommended maximums. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) maximum AQL for exam gloves is 4.0 percent and for surgical gloves is 2.5 percent. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) maximum AQL for examination gloves is 2.5 percent.

Results of user assessment testing by 121 participants at four facilities showed the most liked features of the BioExam(TM) glove are fit, ease of donning, comfort, packaging and tensile sensitivity.(2)

With the introduction of BioExam(TM), along with Biogel surgical gloves, Molnlycke now offers a full line of sterile gloves. "Choosing the right glove for a task is a multi-factorial decision. Individual preferences, consideration for the task at hand, allergies and/or sensitivities, and cost must all be taken into consideration," Twomey explains. The Biogel clinical team recommends the use of latex, deproteinised latex and non-latex gloves to address all needs across general surgery, general exam, and specialty needs as steps in creating a Latex-SAFE environment. Hospitals and surgical centers should always opt for powder-free glove choices as part of a Latex-SAFE environment to decrease the risk of latex sensitization.
