Stepping Actuator provides long controlled movement.

Press Release Summary:

Model DSM4234LN stepper motor can continuously move linear pole with precision of 0.0035 mm full-step linear movement, or 0.00175 mm with half-step drive. Leadscrew nut formed in shaft has M4 hole threaded through center, which enables variable shaft lengths of any practicable size to be used. Threaded nut supports front bearing to adjust for minimum backlash. Applications include throttle settings, plotting, focusing systems or positioning in analytical test equipment.

New Twist to Linear Stepping Actuators

Densitron morphs rotary stepping motor into linear actuator

Santa Fe Springs, August 26, 2002: Densitron introduces the new DSM4234LN stepper motor that can continuously move a linear pole with precision of 0.0035mm full-step linear movement, or 0.00175mm with half-step drive. The reason for such accuracy is the leadscrew nut formed in the shaft that has an M4 hole threaded through the center. Unlike conventional hybrid stepping motors, the DSM4234LN benefits from bearings that are held in place through threaded adjustment rather than using a preloaded wave spring that can move under load, introducing positioning errors. The M4 thread enables variable shaft lengths of any practicable size to be used, and makes the motors ideal for applications where a long controlled movement is critical to the application. Applications include throttle settings, plotting, focusing systems or positioning in analytical test equipment.

The DSM4234LN uses a threaded nut that supports the front bearing to adjust for minimum backlash. This solid support minimizes backlash in either direction irrespective of loading. Forming the nut or leadscrew as part of the motor itself reduces inertia and backlash associated with shaft couplings, to ensure maximum acceleration with minimum positioning error. The shaft is large in diameter compared to a standard motor, and incorporates a threaded portion in the front end. This is made of brass for good lubricity. In other respects, the unit is similar to a standard hybrid stepping motor sharing the same inherent robustness and simple control characteristics.

Two variants of the DSM4234LN are also available. The DSM42234H-C6230 and DSM4234H-C6231 devices incorporate a leadscrew cut directly into the shaft of the motor. The front bearing is spring preloaded to ensure zero backlash under light loading. Under heavier loading, the preload spring may compress to give
backlash errors in the pulling direction. For higher power, customer-specified leadscrew can be fitted to the hollow shaft motor DSM5755H-08200, to allow larger actuators to be built.

OEM prices start at under $20 each for 1,000 pieces for the DSM4234LN. Delivery is from stock to 12 weeks ARO depending on availability.
