Medium Voltage Static Voltage Regulator (MV-SVR) Corrects Voltage Sags in 1/2 Cycle or Less

is Five Times More Efficient, Costs Half as Much as DVR

ANAHEIM, CA-February 25, 2002-SatCon Power Systems, an operating unit of SatCon Technology Corporation (NASDAQ:SATC), introduces the STARSINE(TM) Medium Voltage Static Voltage Regulator (MV-SVR) designed to provide compensation for utility sag events within 1/4 to 1/2 cycle of detection. The MV-SVR system is capable of boosting load voltages from as low as 55% of nominal to above 90% during sags caused by faults in the utility distribution grid or transmission system. STARSINE MV-SVRs are offered with ratings from 100-1200A with system voltages of 3.3kV to 34.5kV at 50/60Hz.

The MV-SVR's high performance and reliability are augmented by a very low installed unit cost and small footprint-about 1/2 and 1/3, respectively, of that of an equivalent inverter-based DVR (Dynamic Voltage Restorer). In addition, the MV-SVR operates with an efficiency of 99.3%, making it nearly five-times more efficient than the equivalent DVR. A superior alternative to complex power inverters, battery-based custom power devices, DVRs, and UPS systems, MV-SVRs require no environmentally hazardous transformer oil, energy storage batteries or capacitors of the kind used by alternative technologies. Costly air conditioning requirements are also not required with the STARSINE MV-SVR.

Design-wise, the MV-SVR is, in many ways, a high-performance version of the proven Load Tap Changer (LTC) that has been used for decades to regulate distribution circuit voltages. However, unlike conventional LTCs with time-delayed mechanical tap changers, the STARSINE MV-SVR's static tap changers instantly select the appropriate voltage tap without progressing through a series of lower voltages. The MV-SVR's microprocessor-based control logic continuously monitors for source voltage sags and, once a sag is detected, a request is issued to the static / thyristor-based electronic tap changer to switch to the appropriate tap to boost the load voltage accordingly.
